Aliens And Angels & Trying Not To Get The Two Mixed Up

The imagination is a funny thing. We fill in the blanks of our understanding with images that comfort or frighten us, as the case may be. In ancient days we filled in the blanks about angels with wings and clouds. After all, we knew through faith that God created a separate race of beings who could move with the speed of thought and were always in the presence of God. So wings and clouds made sense. As our scientific minds have reached further into the outer recesses of our universe so we have faced the enormity of a creation that we cannot limit to ourselves. Could there be other living beings out there? What would they look like? How would they act? How about big-headed, potbellied, little green men who have orders to take over our section of the universe? We had to come up with some way to fill in the blanks, and these images filled our imaginations and fed our anxieties.

The only problem with our images is that they often don’t do reality justice. Never having actually met an angel or an alien, I can’t fill in the blanks better than any one else, but I can say, that through faith, I understand that God is not bound by my perimeters, and historically speaking, He’s been rather good at surprising us. But perhaps the most amazing thing about angels and aliens is the very serious possibility of their existing at all, and our acceptance of that reality without natural proof. Some would say we have more proof for aliens existence than angels. That may simply mean, we have more scientifically-based unanswered questions in which an alien life might fill in the blanks, but that does not mean we really know the fullness of truth. Truth stood on our planet 2000 years ago and proclaimed He was God’s son and then proceeded to prove that fact through words, natural deeds, and miracles – including doing what we never could – rising from the dead, but yet even today we have trouble grappling with the reality of God. We much prefer to create our own images of who God is and fill in the blanks as we see fit.

For me, the nice thing about angels is that I don’t need to know all about them to experience their reality. I have had enough supernatural encounters – I lived through my childhood and, so far, so have my kids – to teach me that I’ve been getting a little help on the side. As for aliens, I have no proof of their existence, but I kinda hope they do show up one day and prove, that though our imaginations may have wandered, they essentially have some spark of the divine reality – after all – God does like to surprise us.
