Believing In the message of The Time Of My Life

I had the opportunity to see my oldest son realize a dream this weekend. For six years he has been focused on accomplishing one thing: to run at the collegiate level. Friday night I got to watch him run his first college race. It was the first time he had run that distance in a race- an 8K (about 5 miles) and it was 92 degrees at race time. He has been running in the mountains of North Carolina and the high there has been in the 70s. He also was coming off a bout with tendonitus (as we live near Atlanta and he had not, prior to going off to college run anywhere hilly) so it wasn't an earth shattering time, but still, he finished before a lot of other runners in the race and his time was an indication of what he will run. His perspective on this race was different than it had been in the past. he knew why he ran slower than he would have liked and he knows what he is capable of next week. More than that, he has great coaches and team mates who believe in him and so he believes he can do better. He is positive he can cut two minutes easily from the time he ran on Friday, which makes him competative in the divison he is running. (NCAA Division II)

That's the message of my book, The Time Of My Life. It's a novel that has running as a major theme, but its not just a book about running. It's a book about characters who come up against struggles and manage to overcome them. It's a book about relationships and believing in the people you have those relationships with. And it's about believing in yourself and knowing you can strive to do better and accomplish your goals. In high school my son wasn't always the best student academically, but he could always run and he had a desire to take that gift to the next level. Others, including his friends, his coaches, and maybe even his parents at times, weren't always sure he could make that happen. But he was- and he's got a scholarship and one race behind him to prove it.

Watching that race, I was extrememly proud of him, and I couldn''t help but think that the message of the book I wrote because he inspired me to write it was real. With hard work, determination, people who support you and believing in yourself, the things you dream of are possible.

If you want a little inspiration-whether you run or not- check out The Time Of My Life. It's on sale right now for .99 on Kindle. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B006UMGVE6
