Saturday was Animal Kingdom day at Disney for us. The best part was that the trip was great for my figure. I must have lost a few pounds in the scorching heat! So what does one do when it’s so blistering hot? What else, you get a crispy funnel cake sprinkled with powdered sugar and enjoy it to the fullest.

I know, I know, crazy…but sometimes we need to do nutty things. We munched on that sweet treat and headed to the bird show.

“Okay, everybody,” the bird trainer said. “Does anybody have any questions about birds?”

“Can birds smell?” A squeaky voice came from the side.

“No, birds cannot smell. There’s only one bird that can, however,” he said, panting from the heat. “The vulture smells its prey and zooms after it once his sense of smell tells him the exact location.”

Yuck. I pictured a vulture dipping down and ripping apart its dead meal.

And with that image, I had news for that trainer. There’s someone else who has a great sense of smell and resembles no bird I know. Actually we cannot see him, but he does plunge to its prey with one sniff of its location.

Have you experienced it? When things just don’t work out, unresolved conflicts nag at you, when days fall apart, or when people just make you crazy…the dark bird called Satan plunges right into our thoughts and begins its banquet. One bite at a time, he rips away our joy, our peace, our trust, and our sense of security.

He can smell the moment life turns a bit sour, he knows that’s when we’re vulnerable, weak, and an easy prey for his tactics.

The Bible doesn’t call him a bird, but a lion that does the same destruction. So, when life gets a bit heated, “Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith…” (1 Peter 5:8-9).

Hide under the faith that keeps you going forward, take refuge in the reassurance that covers you against his deadly bites, and seek shelter in God’s arms where no bird of despair or lion inflicting pain can reach you.
