Clive Cussler pretended to be an agent in order to land his dream agent and avoid the slush pile. He wrote a letter to the person he wanted to represent him, claiming to be a retiring agent, and suggesting he take a look at this promising new author, Clive Cussler, whose submission just came in. Surprisingly enough, the ruse worked and both Cussler and his agent were happy with the outcome.

I don't recommend following that example, but I think the Wall Street Journal may be on to something about the death of the slush pile and so I blogged about it at www.emilybryan.blogspot.com.

Best,
Emily
