faith imageThis week’s exciting news:

1) My son began college this week.  After 12 years of home-school he jumped right in with a biology class.  After his 3rd intensive day he came to me and said, “Well, there’s good news and there’s bad news.”  Hmmm…tell me more.  “Well, my teacher is very, very nice.”  Hmmm…tell me more.  “He’s also really into a population control.”  Hmmm…so what did you say?  Any objections?  “Yeah, I raised a point but he pretty much brushed it aside and went on.”  And so you have it.  The REAL world according to some.  I guess the teacher feels that China’s one-child policy is effective and thus a good thing and that it would be better not to send aid to starving countries – we could decrease the surplus population if we just let them die.  Hmmm…where have I heard that argument before?  My boy made me proud. He knows what’s wrong but he also knows he won’t change this guy’s opinion.  He’s an old timer.  He knows his charts & graphs inside and out.  “Sad thing is,” my son said, “he’ll be on the receiving end of his philosophy some day.”  Couldn’t have said it better.

2)  I’m all signed up for the Catholic Writer’s Guild Conference in Chicago July 30-31.  I’ll be on a panel – not tacked up like one – though I have yet to really understand what that means.  It sounds like a lot of fun though – getting together with a bunch of Catholic authors.  Think of the brain power!  We could take over the world. Thank Heaven we’re using our powers for goodness and niceness…

3) Dena Hunt’s newest book, The Lion’s Den, published by Full Quiver Press is out!!!!  Yeah! Applause! Applause!  You BETTER be applauding.  This is one of the best books I have ever read – everything in it- lust, passion, love, hate, lies, deception and above all TRUTH.  Too cool for words. Get a copy and tell everyone.  Good writers can change the world.

4) And just for your information, my humble little book, ARAM, book 1 of The Deliverance Trilogy, is on a summer sale for 99 cents on kindle.  Yes, it’s Medieval times again, and books are worth the price of a good horse.  A GOOD HORSE.  Think about that and then consider shelling out 99 cents for a book.  It’s quite a deal!

driving a car5) So, my son needs to make it across two towns to get his first college class and lo and behold, I realize, the boy has done most of his driving in Fillmore, Nokomis or Vandalia, all of which have exactly 3 lights among them.  A few stop signs it’s true, but not many lights.  When he goes to college he’ll run a veritable gauntlet of six lights and a serious left turn from a highway off ramp.   So, what’s a mother to do?  Go with him and let him discover the joys of driving the gauntlet, of course.  God must have been amused because this also meant that I got to use the college resource room and was allowed several hours of uninterrupted writing time. My son has now faced lights, drivers who don’t particularly care about lights, and an ambulance in a big hurry.  He’ll meet other joys in time but that’s life this week.

6) I’ve been asked to do reviews for Catholic writers and I am perfectly happy to do so. My only caveat would be that if you are an author in need of reviews, please consider doing reviews for other authors as well.  It is not only nice, it really helps to find out what fellow authors are doing.  There are some great books out there – be willing to pass the word.

7) Ok, it’s June and I am soooo looking forward to the summer solstice, not for any pagan festivals (unless you would throw home-made ice-cream in that category) but because it means the days won’t keep getting longer!  I can’t sleep when the sun is up.  I nearly died on my honeymoon in Scotland.  I thought the sun would never go down, and dang it, if it barely dropped before it sprang right up again.  An’t natural, I say. And who ever invented the “Let’s change our clocks twice a year system”…Well…I have words for him/her…but they’re not nice words.  The sun SHOULD rise at precisely 6:00 AM and set at precisely 6:00 PM. NO clock changes. That would be about perfect in my book.  Guess I don’t get to make those decisions.  I’m really swerving from the saint-accepts-all-discomforts-with-a-smile-thing.  Still, I will celebrate the solstice and the end of the looong days.  Home made ice-cream makes everything better.
