Ghost Orchid - the magnificent "Super Ghost" of Corkscrew Swamp

July 10, 2007, D. K. Christi's birthday, a singular ghost orchid, dormant for dozens of years, decided to burst forth in a glory that mesmerized D. K. Christi as she walked along her favorite Everglades boardwalk.

She was obsessed, visiting the ghost orchid every day as its blooms came and went over three bloomings across three months. By September 2009, D. K. Christi's inspired mystery novel, Ghost Orchid, was published to rave reviews about the beauty of the Everglades shining through on every page, the ghost orchid the heart and soul of the story NPR Reviews) . A mystery of love lies and redemption follows one family's quest for roots and the answer to the question, "Is love eternal?" Photographers search for their perfect shoot - and find themselves instead.

The obsession did not end here. This ghost orchid has exceeded all records of ghost orchid bloomings - anywhere! This year, it's first blooming was in March and then it continued to bloom again in July, August and September on schedule.

The real surprise is the November blooming. That's five blooming cycles in 2010, drawing visitors through all the seasons who may never have had this chance to see the rare and endangered ghost orchid.

Darryl Saffer, award-winning environmental filmmaker has produced the book trailer for Ghost Orchid with his original Everglades video footage and his own music featuring the flute, a haunting intro to a book that is "haunting" and "brilliant" by all accounts.

If you cannot catch the ghost orchid in all its majesty high in the cypress canopy of Blair Audubon Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary in Naples, Florida just off the very accessible boardwalk, you may find it in Ghost Orchid, a lovely holiday gift book that takes novices to an appreciation of the natural world they may not have known before. Preserving these endangered species preserves a part of the human cry for serenity, for beauty, for understanding. The lovely Ghost Orchid by D. K. Christi book trailer at YouTube.com and www.dkchristi.com will take you briefly to the ghost orchid's habitat. Enjoy.
