Gone To The Dogs – Clifford’s Story

Clifford’s story begins in a backyard puppy mill. It is a place where animals are bred and housed in appalling conditions for the sole purpose to make money. These are not breeders or trained animal handlers, these are people who see the opportunity to make money from breeding all types of animals. Some of these animals die, some suffer from disease and malnutrition, and a few lucky ones get a second chance to find a loving home. Clifford’s story doesn’t end there. He finds a few homes in the first couple years of life, he’s left abandoned more than once, and finally he finds his way into a city animal shelter to wait his fate by age five. I’ve grown up with dogs and can’t imagine my life without them. They bring laughter and love every day to my life. I wanted to bring another Labrador retriever into my household and I began looking at animal rescues and shelters. The local animal shelters were at their capacity and that’s when I found Clifford. He had little more than a day before he was scheduled to be euthanized. I didn’t think twice and Clifford was on his way home to my house. He’s had a happy and loving home now for two years. Clifford learned how to eat out of dog bowl, sleep indoors, play with an abundance of squeaky toys, basic obedience, and hang out with his dog and cat buddies.

Clifford's story finally had a happy ending, but he's only one of the few abandoned animals that find homes. I have opened my home to foster dogs and kittens to help take some of the burden off of the local animal shelters and rescues so that these animals can have the opportunity to find a good home. Take the time to find out more information in your own community about fostering a dog or cat. It’s one of the most rewarding jobs that you’ll truly love.
You will find that I like to create a furry character in all my books. In my novel Compulsion, Emily Stone has a loyal black Labrador retrieverSergeant” that brings joy to her life when she’s not hunting down serial killers.
