The Magic of Writing about Love and Romance

We all write our own stories by reacting to events, making decisions consistent with our personalities and history. Yes, love makes the world go round. By our own nature we sculpt our relationships into love by taking risks. It has been said, “God gave us two ears to hear, two eyes to see and two hands to hold. But why did God give us only one heart?

Could it be because he wants to humble us into finding the other one; the one that is to be its mate?” Those who’ve never experienced love probably feel like; they aren’t loving people, i.e., not smart, and/ or different than others. They may be defensive, afraid and isolated, carrying a lot of emotional baggage into their relationships. They have imprinted failure into our chances for love. Most believe if we love life; life will love us back. Every day we must learn to take total and complete responsibility for our lives like in my poem below:

Waiting on Love

“Here I am like every other flower in the garden drinking in the pearled dew, and hour after hour a female willow trembles knowingly at our pain, a swan sings close by, both of us living by breath alone,

Sometimes I moan a little in self-pity, ”Where is my God, why has he forsaken me?” I shake my fist in the air, the weeping willows cry for me, we’re all feeling disowned,

We’re weak and weary standing here at attention, dreaming dreams no mortals dare to dream, the silence unbroken in my pearl-less pelvis while the weeping willow packs her trunk for our trip to Nevermore…”

Why do so many of us keep searching for love and why are we so afraid we’ve settled. Misery is like an internal clock that keeps our minds unsettled. If we want romance, we need to take risks. We also need to accept getting hurt and then move on. We also need to learn how to draw others to us. Smiles beget smiles. No one wants to be around misery. After all, we are genetically programmed to need joy in our lives. We humans like to hang around those who give us joy. We humans also can be masters at inventing excuses to justify why we aren’t happy.  Those like this often go out, find a chair to sit in. They take our coat off and drape it over the back of the chair defensively. It is their way of establishing boundaries…My chair…My world.  So even if we’re coiffed, perfumed and eager to meet new people, there still must be a meeting of the minds as well as enthusiasm. When others approach us, our voice of optimism says, “I’m happy to meet you.”  Our voice of negativity says “Tell me what you can do for me before I let you sit down.” You must learn to give out the signals that will encourage introduction rather than wrap you in boundaries of rejection. Everyone wants world peace but until we learn to love each other I don't see how that can happen. We love our work, our writing, our poetry, our foods and our alcohol. What I'm wondering is why it is so hard to love our siblings, mother and father?

Attracting romance and a loving mate takes a lot more than magic. The magic of love has been around since ancient times and we’ve learned to use e-scentual philters to attract love. The word “philter” comes from the Greek philtron, meaning “to love.”  Philters can be created safely by crafting them of lightly scented waters or vinegars, but the most potent ones are made from essential oils that can be used to anoint key points on the skin.

Women use these philters as perfumes, lip gloss and lotions, by dabbing them on our pulse points, between the breasts and on the back of the neck, all accepted erogenous zones. Men likewise use very masculine, clean lotions and perfumes to attract women. Both genders have the same goal in mind. Sex. Intimacy and  Lasting Love if we’re smart or lucky. Dr. Tina Tessina, Relationship Expert at Authorsden.com, says it all in her poem, “O thorny Rose! Were you easy to pluck, would you fragrance be as sweet?”

Edain McCoy, in her book, Bewitchments, gives us some advice on how to create love potions. She says to begin with a small red or clear glass bottle and fill it half to three-quarters full with a neutral-scent base oil such as olive, flower or almond.

To this base add three drops each of oils known to foster romance such as rose, sweet pea, apple blossom, or honeysuckle. You may use crushed herbs instead to lightly scent the base oil. Use three drops of only one scent or two of one scent and one of another.

These oils will be the catalyst for your will alone. It is a good idea to spot check inside of your forearm a day or two before casting potion, to make sure there is no allergic reaction. The vile must be filled with your best intentions, pure of task, and pure of heart to work.

Give vile as a gift maybe on Valentine’s Day or other holidays. Give him or her instructions to dab some of the mixture on their forehead and temples before going to bed. They will be filling their conscious with perfumes; hopefully, their dreams will foster their love for you.

Another Celtic folklore tells us a story of a woman who goes out at dawn on May Day morning and washes her face in the dew that settles on a hawthorn tree will be irresistibly beautiful. Queen Guinevere, a practitioner of May Day beauty ritual, was immortalized in song and dance in Lerner and Lowe’s musical version of the Camelot story.

A rose bush, honeysuckle plant or leaves from a tree that seem to you to possess “come hither” energies. I personally enjoy using Vanilla, Lavender, Oatmeal, and Coconut to make soaps and candles given as gifts from the Gods.

An old English nursery rhyme, says “The fair maid who, on the first of May, Goes to the fields at break of day, And bathes in dew from the hawthorn tree, Will ever strong and handsome be.”

If you are unconsciously withholding the love, success and abundance you secretly desire, you might remember, when one sculpted heart calls out to another through the senses of magic, each must be deserving of love before it can blossom even on Valentine’s Day.
