Jo-Anne,
You are right that authors need to define "their niche." Too often we try to write and sell what we "think" our audience or customers want instead of starting with the customer's "wants and needs" and working backwards. I stress this in the Authorpreneur 2.0 program (http://www.proauthors.com).
