In biblical history before the death and resurrection of Christ a sacrifice unto God was necessary to cleanse the sins of the people. God required a perfect sacrifice without spot, blemish, or deformity and he wanted the best sacrifice a person could offer.
But whatsoever hath a blemish, that shall ye not offer: for it shall not be acceptable for you. And whosoever offereth a sacrifice of peace offerings unto the LORD to accomplish his vow, or a freewill offering in beeves or sheep, it shall be perfect to be accepted; there shall be no blemish therein. Blind, or broken, or maimed, or having a wen, or scurvy, or scabbed, ye shall not offer these unto the LORD, nor make an offering by fire of them upon the altar unto the LORD. –Leviticus 22:20-22
The blessing of the new covenant is that people no longer have to offer a sacrifice for their sins to be forgiven. Jesus Christ has died for our sins and his death began a new and permanent covenant between God and human beings. The blood of Jesus Christ covers all of our sins but there is still one sacrifice that God still requires of those who believe in Jesus.
I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service.-Romans 12:1
God wants us to be living sacrifices for him and that means I must put God first before any of my own priorities. God is the most important part of my life and my day begins and ends with Christ. A true living sacrifice lives to please God and offers God their service. Living sacrifices are the servants of God and as servants we give God are best.
Ye offer polluted bread upon mine altar; and ye say, Wherein have we polluted thee? In that ye say, The table of the LORD is contemptible. And if ye offer the blind for sacrifice, is it not evil? and if ye offer the lame and sick, is it not evil? offer it now unto thy governor; will he be pleased with thee, or accept thy person? saith the LORD of hosts.-Malachi 1:7-8
God doesn’t want our life to be maimed or defiled but he wants us to put are best behavior forward. He wants our minds clean, our hearts obedient, and our time dedicated to his service. The most important part of being a living sacrifice is to love God and to love people and without love our sacrifice is in vain. Nobody is perfect that is why the blood of Jesus covers our sins but we still should model our life after Christ. The best life you can offer to God is an obedient life because it is then that God can really use you for his reasonable service.
