You can try to find a working definition for “figurative language,” but I’d rather say that…Figurative language is the stuff of wordsmiths like poets and creative fiction writers. Using similes or metaphors helps bring language to life. “O my Luve is like a red, red rose that’s newly sprung in June.”—Robert Burns. Powerful line, isn’t it? Novelists can get away with a cliché here and there, but too many and publicists quickly reject their manuscripts. Journalist too uses figurative language like idioms to make their columns and articles lively, “…a grey area, no doubt, for Wall Street CEOs.

Kids need help understanding that a combination of specific words may have a different meaning than the literal meanings of each word. A figurative language list is one easy way to expose them to the concept. Put a set of figurative language examples in a worksheet or quiz and let them try to explain the meaning behind each one. But also, they need to know the many types of figurative language options they have when they write, like simile, metaphor, assonance, hyperbole, idiom, and cliché, because great writers make all the money!
