There are few things greater on this earth than the love a parent has for their child or children. Parental love is exclusive and unique and irreplaceable. The Love a parent has for a child is exclusive because it can only be between that child and that parent. The relationship or bond between a parent and child is usually built from birth and it is a combination of emotions ranging from joy, pain, heartbreak, and happiness. The reason why parental love is unique is because the Parent will always love the child more than the child loves them back. This fact causes many to scratch their head but it is true if it weren’t true then a child would never be able to leave the house and start their own family. It is so amazing when we understand that God our Father loves us more than we can ever love him and how that affects our daily life. A parent’s love will allow that parent to be loyal to that child even when the child has long given up on the parent. Children say things like don’t speak to me again or I hate you yet the parent continues to love. Children often become upset at parents when rules are enforced or when things don’t go their way yet the parent continues to protect their child even if it means upsetting them. When a child hurts the parent hurts more especially when the child makes a mistake the parent knew could have been avoided. The parent wants to protect their child from the world heartbreak, disappointment, and injury and the child hates the shelter and wants to experience the world first hand. God who is a Father to all that trust in Jesus Christ experiences the most painful of heartbreaks daily but none greater than sacrificing his Son on the cross for our salvation.
God loves us through all of our mistakes and all of our shortcomings. Think about the times in your life when your actions were contrary to the word of God and put you in harm’s way. Imagine the days many of us spend serving other masters loving other fathers and neglecting the heart of our Father in heaven. Our sin is painful for God to witness in fact it is so painful that the grueling cross can be the only picture of what our sin does to the heart of God. Yet God the Father is willing to not force his children to love him or be obedient to him but will allow his children to go out and make decisions for themselves. Then when the child has come to make a decision that life was better doing things their Fathers way God will be waiting with open arms to bless his children. I guess in one way or another we are all prodigal children returning home to live life the way our loving Father has intended us to (Luke 15:11-31).
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.-John 3:16
