Research for Amish books in Kalona, Iowa

A trip down memory lane for some, an educational tour for school children and research for me, the author of Amish books. This picture is a grandfather house - one room with kitchen in one corner, table in another and bed on the other end. If you look you can see a grandma standing toward the back of the house.

I was curious about what the inside of an Amish house looks like so I took pictures to refer to when I'm writing.

So many other items like a large crock used to make lye soap in. A brick bake oven that had one time over heated and been on fire above the door.

I'm familiar with cast iron kettles to heat water in on wash day, but I'd never seen one before that had a door under the stand the kettle was attached to. Wood or coal could be inserted to heat the water.

And how about this wooden windmill put together by someone who thought it was wiser to used the wood on his farm to build a windmill and supply tank than it would be to buy a metal windmill.

A pie safe for a large family to keep food to keep the mice from munching on the leftovers, bread and desserts at night. I took lots of pictures and shall treasure them all as a reference for a book or a possible cover.

Kalona, Iowa is the Quilt Capitol of Iowa and the largest Amish settlement west of the Mississippi River.
