Rie Sheridan Rose "The Fairy GodFather" The Author's Lab/ Collaboration

Have you ever done a writing collaboration? Hands please… okay here is a sampling of my experience working with Rie Sheridan Rose. First off let’s just reaffirm the fact that I am just a blogger, blogtalk radio host and occasional ”author”. I put that in parentheses because I mostly write the way I would talk, simple, to the point, not much in the way of large adjectives, painting pictures with words is not my “thing”. I think we can agree with that, can’t we?

Generally the way we work is that either I start a story or the real author does. In this case Rie sent me the first piece. Basically I was stunned, and to be blunt I was totally intimidated. Her ability to paint a picture with words is incredible. Here she puts this Miller’s son in this beautiful meadow; he falls asleep and awakes to a see a bunch of little fairies flying around him. First off, trying to do a collaboration and to pull it off so that the story flows takes a bit of patience from both authors and a little give and take. On this story, I was trying to figure out what my part in this was going to be and how I could even come close to matching her skill level. I mean just read the first 750 words; I was a bit nervous. I emailed her and told her my issues, basically she rules, I suck , and that there is no way I can even climb to that level. She was very kind and said give it a try. I showed it to my wife; she looked at me and laughed pretty good. I mean laughed! Then she has a great idea, she says go with what you know. That is what all the authors on the blogtalk show tell you they do, go with what you know.

So that my friends is how “The Fairy GodFather” was made, basically out of fear to have fun:”Make me a wish I can’t refuse”  was born and the story took on a life of its own from there. I was proud of my efforts in the end; Rie Sheridan Rose took me to a universe I never thought I would be in, and we turned out a very good all age’s digital short story. I was very happy to share this with my youngest daughter and my older kids as they had some pretty good laughs. Are you looking for a good read? Drop the coin on this one or any of the installments in The Author’s Lab/Collaboration series; there is not a bad apple in the bunch.
