Say What? & Free Books

Say What?  It is a lucky thing that everyone speaks at least one language in common in our household – or we’d be in serious trouble.  Case in point, my six year old daughter was looking at a notepad the other day with “Hello Kitty” written on the top.  I said, in that teacher voice I sometimes use, “Hey, do you know what this says?”  My little one looked at me smugly and said, “Yep, that’s Heloikio Kitty.”  Short pause as I digested this bit of information.  “Say again.”  She repeated it exactly and just as certainly.  I tried to point out that the word was “Hello” not “Heloikio” but to no avail.  I then drew another daughter into the discussion and asked her what was on the pad of paper.  To my startled discomfort, she repeated exactly what my six year old had said.  And so on up the proverbial line.  Four of my daughters ages six to thirteen were convinced that the notepad showed “Heloikio Kitty”.  When I finally traced the origin of this misunderstanding and convinced them of the actual words on the pad they laughed.  It was all based on a friend’s comment – apparently said very quickly – and they were all convinced of the same thing. Sometimes it pays to check on what your daughters are thinking – who knows what they have heard on an average day…
