The Book Marketing Network

For book/ebook authors, publishers, & self-publishers

My last Gotham Short Story writing class was this past Tuesday, 6/16 and in looking back I see I've made some friends, had an excellent teacher, learned a lot from everyone in the class and, the cherry on the cake, I've gotten some budding stories well underway.

Now that I won't be spurred on by meeting weekly with my class, I've found that I still have momentum and motivation to continue. I need to ensure that motivation is maintained for the weeks and months ahead. In part, I know that motivation is going to come from reading. Voracious reading! I've begun The Heart Is A Lonely Hunter, by Carson McCullers which was a parting gift from one of the students in class. He brought in a large stack of books and invited each of us to take one - even though he hadn't even read them yet. I thought that was such a nice gesture.

After reading Coetze's Waiting For the Barbarians I'm a little leery of jumping into Slow Man which is sitting on my night table. I'd like to find something closer to the tone and experience of either Jeffrey Eugenides Middlesex or Richard Russo's Straight Man - both of which I really enjoyed over the past 10 weeks.

In addition to the many stories I "ingest" I've also found myself listening more. Listening to how people speak to one another, paying attention to their smallest quirky habits, noticing every aspect of how the world looks and wanting to figure out a way to capture that in words. Perhaps most importantly, I need to listen to my own heart, as in less cerebral more emotional content.

I'm looking forward to the challenge.
