Sheila L. Jackson – Author Interview
by Cathy B Stucker 7/21/2010

What is your most recent book? Tell us a bit about it.

Through The Eyes of God

It exposes the people and places —community, family, friends, workplace and church— that are responsible for causing feelings of unworthiness and self-hatred. It Ideals with how we allow others to validate us and set standards that are unobtainable. And when we fail to meet those standards our self-ideal fails, which causes self-esteem issues.

Tell us something about yourself.

I was born in Shreveport, Louisiana where I still reside with my husband and two daughters. I graduated from Booker T. Washington H.S. I am a Clinical Laboratory Scientist and holds a Bachelor’s of Science degree from ULM of Monroe, La and an Associate of Science degree from Southern University, Shreveport, La.

I have been writing professionally for 4 years. I also wrote articles, such as: Only the Strong Survive, Count it all Joy, and Suffering in Silence, which appeared in Dream Magazine. I also wrote: Voting Booths, allows you to speak now or forever hold your peace (during the presidential election)

What inspired you to write this book? The Spirit of God, He shows me a person or persons that have been beaten down by life and bless me with a word that can deliver them from their broken spirits.

How did you publish this book?

Through Axiom Press.

Why did you decide on that publisher?

My agent found this company and I liked what they stood for.

How did you know you wanted to be a writer?

The Spirit of the Lord told me to write at the age of 39. How did you get started? I just wrote what God put in me and the words just flowed.

What do you believe is the hardest part of writing?

Editing, because you have to read your manuscript over and over. Many people seem to believe that the publishing company will do it all, but it takes several pair of eyes to catch your mistakes and sometimes that’s not full proof.

How do you do research for your books?

The Bible, Life, TV, Books/Magazines, co-workers, etc.

Did you learn anything from writing this book? What?

Yes. People are hurting all over the world. It’s not just a black or white problem, it’s a people problem. I also learned that it’s okay to be who God created me to be and that the color of my skin does not determine who I am, but what’s in my heart does.

What are you reading now?

Nothing at the moment, because I am currently researching infomation for my third book.

What types of books do you like to read?

Thrillers, Romance, Christian Fiction, Self-help books.Who are your favorite authors? Charles Dickens, Kimberla Roby, Victoria Christopher Murray, Sheila Goss, Ernest Hemingway, Joel Osteen, TD Jakes, Joyce Meyers, and Beth Moore.

Why? Because they all satisfy my many personalities.

Are you working on your next book? What can you tell us about it?

It’s filled with drama and action. It will be my first Christian Fiction. I don’t want to reveal too much.

What is the best advice you could give other writers about writing or publishing?

Never give up. You will receive more rejection letters than acceptance letters, but don’t let that discourage you. For every no there is a yes. If you believe in your writing you will keep trying.

What are you doing to promote your latest book?

E-blast, magazine ads, book signing, speaking engagement, blogs, websites, and going to places in my community (beauty shops, libraries, stores, etc.)

Where can readers learn more about you and your book?
