Poets for Peace event:

Northwest Poets Shannon Laws, Carla Shafer and Betty Scott are hosting Washington's first "Read In! Write On! Poets for Peace" event.  On Veterans Day weekend, November 9th, the public is invited to a free gathering where poets, writers and musicians give voice to rising aspirations and expressions for peace now and for every generation.  The event is part of a world-wide "Poetathon for Peace" launched by World Poets Canada, and Chuckanut Sandstone Writer's Theater. 

Carla Shafer, co-founder of Chuckanut Sandstone Writers Theater, and the Bellingham Repertory Dance Company is now accepting applications for the 2014 Phrasings collaboration for Writers. 

Our 8th annual collaboration and performance of Phrasings, of original modern dance choreographed with new poetry and stories will be presented in 3 shows on April 11th, 12thand 13th of 2014. Phrasings happens in Bellingham, WA at the Firehouse Performing Arts Center (14th and Harris).

The Bellingham Repertory Dance Company produces fresh, engaging and diverse concerts that appeal to modern dance enthusiasts as well as first time audiences.

Carla's background:

Carla Shafer is a graduate of Lewis and Clark College (Portland, Oregon) and holds an MEd from Bank Street College of Education (New York, NY). She has worked for 20 years in higher education and 10 in the field of early childhood. Previously, she has served as the Dean of Development for Northwest Indian College and the Director of Whatcom County Child Care Services, a non-profit serving families of low-income children. An educator with forty years experience, she has expertise in operation of non-profit programs, federal grant writing and monitoring and supervision and evaluation of Title III-A Strengthening Institutions programs. Her passion is educational access and equality for everyone at every stage in one’s life. She believes that the primary pathway to true democracy is through public education that provides holistic, enlightened learning experiences. She believes that community supported non-profit programs have provided innovation and transformation to teaching and learning.
