Sometimes we learn the most when we least expect it. The Instant: The Little Book of Death is an intriguing little book that will capture the imagination and provide food for thought for quite a long time after reading. Merih Turkdogan provides a novel insight into death or near death experiences that will seem very real to readers. There are thought-provoking scenarios that might have never been imagined before reading the book.

The Instant begins with a very ordinary Austrian accountant, Herr Zimmermann, whom we come to know a little about just before he dies - in a split second. We know his thoughts as he goes through an experience that only happens once to each of us. We follow Zimmermann as he goes through the rainbow and takes notice of the millions of color shades within it.

As he continues his journey through the rainbow, Zimmermann realizes that there was so much more he could have learned while he was alive - but now it's too late - he's dying and is only learning this amazing skill during the very few seconds he has left.

Zimmermann discovers that there are housekeeping rules he must learn before he travels to the other side and that seasons can actually be bartered. When he meets William Shakespeare, Zimmermann finally understands (and feels) what "to be or not to be" means and is bombarded with questions he should have, but never did, bother to ask during his lifetime.

Herr Zimmermann meets many characters as he continues on his death journey - one, Cosmic Beggar, is deemed to be the only hope for humanity's survival and for future successes in our upcoming lives. The Cosmic Beggar even has an era named after him - The Age of the Cosmic Beggar.

Other characters Zimmermann meets include Santa Claus, James Allen and the Devil. Turkdogan also includes other characters that you've probably never hear of, such as Delivery Genie, Dwarf of a Million Smells, Ghost in a Bottle, the Set Dresser and Starlight Gypsy.

Even though Herr Zimmermann was an ordinary human being in real life, his death brings him into contact with characters and ideas that are extraordinary. He thinks that he's yin and yang simultaneously, but he also feels complete for the first time in the life that's about to end.

Absurd as the story may sound, Turkdogan manages to tickle the imagination and make the reader think, "What if," we started examining life and death and what might be on the other side? Would we really wish we'd asked more questions and attempted to find the answers to age-old matters that we wondered about all our lives?

Merih Turkdogan's first book, The Instant: The Little Book of Death, makes us contemplate what it might feel like to die - and perhaps it will make us think about what else we can do to make Earth and our lives here better and more fulfilling.
