What You Can Learn From the "Success Principles" by Jack Canfield

I was at a cross roads in my life, in 2005. I was having marriage problems and I was hating my real estate job. I was feeling unfulfilled and even a little jaded with life. I knew getting away from it all for a few days, would be my answer. I went to visit my friend Jose, in Houston for a long weekend. While visiting my friend, I saw a book on his coffee table. The book was the "Success Principles" by Jack Canfield and Janet Switzer. During my down time I would pick up the book and read.

I had read numerous "self-help" and personal development books all of my life. I found myself really connecting with this book because it broke down the journey to success in steps. The writing was clear and concise and I knew enough about Jack Canfield to know that he was a man that really was living what he taught. My friend let me take the book home with me and it became permanently attached to my hand for weeks.

One of the first chapters that really blew me away was the chapter on "Taking 100% percent responsibility" The conclusion of this chapter hit me like a brick. I was in constant blame mode for everything that was happening around me. I was blaming my wife, my partners and other things around me for what was happening to me. Jack outlined an important formula that says: E+R=O (Event + Response = Outcome). In essence this means that our response to the event that happens to us is what determines our outcome. In other words, I might not have control over an economic meltdown, but I do have control how I respond to that melt down.

Do I slow my spending? Do I start eliminating some credit debt? These are responses to the Event. I was blown away by knowing that the starting point of success was taking 100% responsibility for where you are. This is how you can get out of where you are, by realizing that the same person who got you there is the same person who can get you out of there. This is true for your job, relationship, weight, sales income, or anything. Once you realize that you are in control, you can take the wheel and steer yourself out of the mess.

For anyone who wants to take an enlightening and powerful look at success steps that help you to get from where you are to where you want to go, then you should definitely read and practice "The Success Principles." I am reading the Success Principles again, and I am finding new gems and new insights that I had not discovered before. I am putting into practice much of what I am reading and I am finding to have tremendous results. Jack Canfield's candor and sincerity come through in this book, it feels like he is sitting with you at a coffee shop and giving you his great advice in person.

Rereading this book, has inspired me to get back to my purpose of writing and speaking. I am also exercising everyday and I am working toward some breakthrough goals that I created after reading the chapter on Goals. If you haven't already read the book, go do so and put some of the Principles into practice. You have nothing to lose and so much to gain and contribute by doing it. Thank you Jack.
