Things are changing pretty fast here in the world of books and what was once considered "essential" is becoming outdated. I, too, wold like to know specifically what your friend is talking about. I'm still using post cards, a business card with my new book on the back, a sell sheet, sign, etc but am also using BookBuzzr, Twitter, FB, etc.<br />

It's all about "touches" and the more you can touch someone, the better. I once read that there are 1,001 ways to market books. Right John:-)

How about an example of what your friend calls unnecessary? There is a pretty wide variety of things that can be called marketing materials. Pencils with your name on, mugs, balloons, sky writing... you can be as crazy or as practical as you like; what matters is can the success of your marketing materials be measured or directly tied to a book buying decision.
