Yes, Maury, what they say is true. You will need to market your book before it comes out so there is time to get it into bookstores by the time it is available. If you can get a mockup of the cover - even an electronic one - and take it around with you to the stores you want to be in, that helps. In the book industry, a book that is 2-3 months old is on its way out. A 6-month old book is yesterday's news.

I have seen this issue come up before. Most bookstores - even independents - want what's new and fresh, which means a lot of the time they won't take books that have been out more than a couple of months. Now is the time to do your marketing to bookstores, by taking a flyer with a mockup of the cover art (if you don't already have an actual graphics file of the art) and a well written description of the book and a bio of your expertise/experience. A professional color picture of you should be included if you can. Provide all the basic info on the book such as price, type of cover, ISBN#, binding type, your hometown, and the number of pages. Library of Congress info would also be a bonus if you have that. Also let the bookstores know that you are available for short (20-30 min) presentations related to the book, so you're not just looking for book signing events. This tells them you want to help them bring customers in for an extended time period and give them information, not just sell your book.

Some bookstores, depending on the subject matter of the book, will take books that are "older" - up to 2 years past pub date. But this usually works only with children's books, fiction, and cookbooks. Nonfiction and books that have a time-sensitive subject won't sell after about 6 months past the pub date.

Good luck!

Hi,
Thank you for your comment. I've been out of the country for a month and just returned. It is finally safe to go back to Nepal now that the Maoist situation seems to be resolving itself.

Maury,
Thank you for your kind words, this has been the hardest thing that I have ever been through in my life. I honestly hope that no one else ever has to go through such a horrible ordeal.

Hi Maury,

How are you? Thanks for accepting my friend request.

I'm just letting some of my friends know I started a website for authors; it is a resource directory. You may find it useful.

I experienced Qigong Healing in Nashville a few years ago. Amazing!

Your work sounds very interesting, something right up my publisher's alley!

Hello Maury, so pleased to meet you. I looked at your website and find it very fascinating. I believe that one of my best friend's husbands is studying a particular type of massage that might be what you are describing. I will return to your website to find out more about it. Looking forward to keeping in touch~

Thanks for the tip about the SF Salon. I'll definitely contact her. Book sales are going well, moving steadily, not meteorically. Good news is that New Leaf has picked the book up for distribution, which will be a great help in getting it into stores.

WIll be on KSFR on Monday @ 5, I think.

Am in Albuquerque over the weekend. And then...???

Hi Maury,

Thank you for the add. I'd love to read your guides and very possibly have you on my show. We're starting a new show just for authors yet, you sound as though CelebratingYourPotential is the one you should be on. Please let me know when you're ready to go.

Also, I started another network group for podcasters, speakers, writers and coaches here:

http://unlimitedspeaking.ning.com/profile/Revvell

Maybe you would join me there?

Thank you. Going to check out your site now. I've been doing qigong for about 18 years or so now.
