"Where hundreds of Marines died in November 1943, in the battle of Tarawa, there are now millions of plastic bags, crumpled cardboard boxes..." Thus reads a recent AP dispatch about the condition of Red Beach, where Leon Cooper, a US Navy landing boat officer, saw his fellow Marines being killed by murderous Japanese gunfire during the 3 day battle that became known as "Bloody Tarawa". This disgraceful condition has persisted all these years. Leon has tried for the past 3 years to have his big dumb government take necessary action to remove the garbage piles from this hallowed ground, with no results to date from the usual suspects in Washington. Leon's efforts continue because he believes he owes it to all the guys he saw dying in defense of our country

I do hope that you can get the government to act. I think the beach should be sacred.
