The Book Marketing Network

For book/ebook authors, publishers, & self-publishers

I have a question about how to improve your name recognition on search engines when you share a name with other popular people.

For example, other than me, other David McLaughlin's are the former president of the American Red Cross, a Canadian politician, a popular bluegrass musician, and a professor at a large university.

How do I cut through?

Good question ~ surprised with all the marketers here, you've not received any replies. I asked my husband and he says if you've got your own website where you can add whatever meta data you want, you can optimize by finding the right keywords, a good description, make sure the title of your website is search engine friendly ~ there's meaning in it that people are searching for....

Also getting your name out doing opinions on Amazon, joining various online groups and forums; having a MySpace (or more than one) a Tribe.org profile... All of these get you out there. Get a podcast going...

Hoping this is helpful for you.

Sometimes it just takes time, David. Currently the other Kendall Hanson that comes up when I get Googled is a realtor in Las Vegas. On the other hand, she doesn't show at all when you Google "Trade magazines" and that's the most important thing. I think trying to get your middle initial into everything is also a good strategy, but if you keep an eye on the searches used to find your site, I think most of the time you'll discover that your name is not the first thing that pops into a searcher's head.
The bluegrass guy is pretty good, by the way.
Sorry for asking a dumb question, but how do you know what searches people use to find your site?

And Revell, thanks-great link!
You're welcome David. Hoping it helps.

There is nothing like dumb question. Chinese proverb says, "If you ask question, you may be a fool for five minutes, but if you don't ask, you are a fool forever."

First, brand yourself and your name--whichever you prefer. Brainstorm the services you offer. There are several keyword tools. Yahoo has overture keyword, there is good keyword (which is a free tool) and word tracker which is a paid service. Go to google and type in keyword suggestion tool. That's where I start. Others start with overture and multiply by five assuming that 5X the number of people who search in overture search in google. (note: Yahoo bought overture sometime ago). This is just the basics. SEO is easy to start but time consuming to maintain. But everything start with querrying the search engines and trying to see what comes up. Then compare it with your core value or what you are targeting for your audience based on your unique keyword phrases.
First decide what keyword you want to target and brand. If you want to brand your name as your targeted keyword or key phrase, You must add some distinguishing characteristics that set your apart from all those you mentioned. The keyword(s) you are targeting should be in your heading ( title H2 tags), as well as your meta tages (description and keyword tags). Then every other thing you say or write should revolve mainly around the keyword or key phrases that are related. This is the whole purpose of keyword research which is the root and bedrock of search engine optimization, lead generation, traffic and monetization.

You must make up your mind about how to position yourself. It is your unique selling proposition that distinguishes you from all others. So what are you? inspirational teacher, bible teacher, info-marketer or author consultant? Are you a life coach? What is the heart beat of your message to the world? Even if you are multi-talented, you must chose an entry point to brand yourself. You must sit down and decide from your core value or what you are called to do that separates you from all these people you mentioned. I suggest you brand keywords instead of key names because of similarity of name. They may also be more popular. Also add the middle initial always even if you want to brand keyword instead of names.

Example of meta description tags: Insipirational teacher David B. Mclaughlin, Your life coach and speaking consultant: Teaching you how to build your future from your past. He can help you turn your mistakes into miracles and stumbling blocks into stepping stones. His ground-breaking book: 40/40 hindisight is your companion for your foresight (to move from where you are to where you want to be).
Meta keywords could be: life coach, inspirational teacher, inspirational author/writer, menoring consultant etc.

This is just a hypothetical example. I don't know how you are branding yourself or the problem you are positioning yourself to solve. You must decide the primary reason why people should come to you or desire what you have to offer. You must be specific even you are multi-talented. You must have an entry point before you diversify.
