What's Your Biggest Challenge with Your Book?

I'd be interested to learn what authors/publishers on this network think their biggest challenges are with their book. I wonder if there's any common, pervasive challenge we all face.

Darlene—
If you're like me, I find I have more time to market if I don't feel overwhelmed by all there is to do. Laser focus helps make marketing more fun.

My suggestion is to keep it simple. Do five things each day to market your book. Those things may be phone calls to distributors or bookstores, contacting the media, identifying and contacting a group that may benefit from buying your book in volume, etc.

Five things a day translates to 1825 marketing activities in a year. That's a lot of activity; and some of those things will pay dividends in book sales for you.
i think that writing it was the easy part, and getting it into the hands of readers the hard part. If any of you have any good idea, i would love to hear them!

One of the biggest challenges in selling books is coping with the enormous number of avenues and opportunities available on the Internet for promoting your book. Any author attempting to reach out to his / her readers is dogged by a number of questions such as:
- How do I make my book-extract accessible on Facebook / MySpace / Orkut?
- How do I allow my friends and fans to share my book on social networking sites and blogs?
- How do I allow people to bookmark my book on sites such as Digg, Delicious or Reddit?
- How do I allow fans of my book to share my book extract with their contact lists from Gmail or Yahoo mail?

The biggest challange I have is; After having had a couple of books published and written what I wanted to say, finding an interested audience, other than my family, is the challenge.
"Somthing Old 'n' Nothing New" has to do with my views and experiences as I have traveled this earth for the last seventy three years. It seems there are areas in which society can be questioned and congratulated on today compared to yesterday.
The book, "The Five G's Plus Two" is a rendition of the joys, challenges and accomplishments of raising a family of five. Death not being a stranger and neither is the Hand of God!
Hi Audrey,

Since your book is about raising a family, look into talks at the woman's organizations all over. Ask the manager of libraries to give you a few hour. They even advertise in newspapers for you. Offer to print the ad and give it to them. If you have some humor in your talk, people will relate to it.

Bookstores should be interested in a subject like that. Readers want to know what they will get out of your book or go with the humor in life. We have forgotten how to enjoy the funny things in our lives today.

If you become a good speaker with laughter and humor, you will have a following.

Good Luck!
Thank you so very much I certainly will follow your lead. Thank-you Albertasequeira.
Hi Bill. You are truly a "wealth" of information. You seem to really know your stuff! I am new to the writing world, but I know beyond the shadow of a doubt I need to share my story with others. I have Muscular Dystrophy for the last decade of my life. I have been working on my memoir...

To make a long story shorter, I started blogging June 2008, and since then my blog has gone international. I finished my memoir, I found a very small publisher who is interested. They are not sure of a release date for a print copy, but gave me their blessing to make my memoir available as an ebook (PDF). I have already sold some, but I guess my biggest challenge is getting the word out about my memoir. I know there are multitudes of people out there who are hopeless and destitute because of their suffering. I know because I used to be one of them! I know promotion, and more promotion is the key. I have a very nice website explaining all about the book-http://www.wix.com/LoriLaws/A-Blessing-in-the-Storm

The advice about getting book reviews was well taken. I just emailed fellow bloggers and asked them if they would read my ebook and review it. It is not a long book, only 70 pages in length. How do you feel about successfully marketing an ebook?
Lori—
Welcome to the wild & wacky world of being an author. Thank you for your kind comments.

Your book lends itself nicely to "cause" marketing. How many Muscular Dystrophy organizations are there in the United States? The best known of them is Jerry Lewis's Muscular Dystrophy Labor Day Telethon. There are many others, I'm sure.

Tie into these organizations. Inform them of your book. Make the book available as a promotional item they can give donors who pledge money to their cause. Think big. Using your book as a promotional item may be a good opportunity for Jerry Lewis's Telethon.

Also, consider making a portion of the proceeds from the sale of your book a contribution the Muscular Dystrophy research. If you do so, you can promote and advertise the fact on your book and in the media.

Speaking of the media, you could easily become a media darling. Start with the local media. Radio and television stations are hungry for knowledgeable guests who will be interesting to their listeners or viewers. Start locally to build your confidence, your presentation and your list of appearances. You will be more attractive to national media once you have established yourself locally.

Good luck with your project.

If you feel it's the right community for you, consider submitting an excerpt of your ebook for publication online.
This would be indirect "marketing" of your entire ebook.
I just looked at the site and found a puzzling note that they are no longer adding content. I'd track down what happened and what might be possible now--because I really recommend these people!
Thank you Dr. Marlena Corcoran,

I will look into this:)
