What's Your Biggest Challenge with Your Book?

I'd be interested to learn what authors/publishers on this network think their biggest challenges are with their book. I wonder if there's any common, pervasive challenge we all face.

Joel, thanks for upping the bar and not letting us settle for less than top quality.

It seems to me that there are all kinds of editors out there, each with a different forte. Some are experts in grammar. Others know the elements of a great story and can tell a novelist several things to take her story from "a good story" to a "heart-stopper". Others are logical thinkers who can see where a non-fiction writer's logic breaks down or when a point relies on weak research. Still others think in outlines and can say, "That material belongs in chapter one rather than chapter seven. And still others can spot all kinds of little details that others would skip right over.

Joel, in your professional opinion, do publishers generally find an editor who can do it all, or do they rely on several editors who have have editorial strengths in different areas?
Steve,

Typically books are acquired by acquisitions editors at larger publishing houses. Developmental editing is done by them working directly with the author although they may bring in specialists to help out or advise on a particular field. Also keep in mind that most nonfiction books are contracted before they are written. Most professional writers will not write a book they have not already sold.

Other editors further down the line do the copyediting (line by line review for style, grammar, usage, consistency, etc) and proofreading is done by production editors and proofreaders.

Hope that helps.
Hi Suzanne,
I belong to "Authors Without Borders" www.awb6.com and we do reviews. There is also Books In Sync at www.booksinsync.com.
Anyone on here heard of BookBuzzr.com? I was trying to join but the pages there are a mess and even the feedback page is garbled. Have they ever been good?
Definitely promotion. If you go to far, people are offended; and if you don't say enough you don't sell anything. Being able to straddle the line of who, what, when and where to post ads would make the promotional aspects of all of this a lot easier.
I wanted to share my event with everyone on Book Marketing. I've been doing private speaking engagements at halfway homes and alcoholic rehabilitation centers.

Tomorrow night, Thursday the 22nd from 6pm-8pm, I'm doing my first "public"speaking on "The Affects of Alcoholism on the Whole Family" at the Lakeville Public Library, in Lakeville, MA. I've sent personal invitations to reports, editors, cable tv hosts, etc. to the event. I've made pastries for the event.

It's been in four newspapers. I'm hoping a get a crowd to come. I have to talk for an hours.
The next day Friday, Oct. 23rd, I go on the Taunton (MA) radio show WVBF station for a half hour interview on my new memoir Someone Stop This Merry-Go-Round; An Alcoholic Family in Crisis.

I'm excited and have butterflies at the same time. I just wanted everyone to see the steps I'm taking to get out there.

Thanks for reading this.
Wonderful news! I hope it is very successful and that you actually run out of goodies because so many people come.

Good luck!
Thanks so much for keeping us up! I'm praying for you for tonight's meeting. It sounds like you're doing everything right - contacting the media beforehand, etc. I see a lot of people setting up speaking engagements, then assuming that someone is doing the publicity for the event. Even if someone said they'd do it, it seems the ball often gets dropped. You're making it happen - a great example to all of us.
Hello,

I thought I'd update everyone on my events.

The speaking engagement went well. I hoped for more people: about thirteen. I had an editor there who handles two newspapers and she audio taped the whole hour talk. She 's going to do a full write-up for both newspapers. She requested me to send her a picture of my husband and daughter who died to give an emotional story that she prints.

One woman who came has a husband who belongs to the Lion's Club and he wanted by business card so he can schedule me to talk at their meeting. Everyone stayed for refreshments that I made and they mingled in with each other. A mixture of alcoholic abusers came along with family members with a loved one who is drinking. I had tremendous remarks on the talk. One girl cried the whole time. Her sister is drinking heavy.

My interview today on the WVBF Radio Station in Taunton, MA went great! I was on for a full hour. I've been on this show with Tony Lopes twice but Bob hit everything with topics. He had people calling in to talk to me. Someone who had been to my talk the night before, gave great praise and highly recommended people to go to my next one. Bob wanted to introduce me to a priest from Stonehill college shortly because of my talks. Networking is great.

Today, I found out my niece, on my husband's side, is in the RI Hospital. She had about her sixth alcoholic seizure. She was very close to my daughter, Lori, and they both drank together. This disease is so strong that Paula was with her uncle, my husband, when he died, with my daughter, and still can't give this demon up.

Thanks for sharing my events. I'll let you know if something grows from them.
Alberta,

Sorry to hear about the continuing troubles in your family with alcoholism.

On the other hand it sounds like your marketing is really getting traction. Thanks for continuing to let us know how you are doing!

Best,
