51 Ways to Blog as a Novelist

We all know that blogging is one of the best ways to get attention in today's Internet world. A blog is a godsend to your website, bringing it traffic, fans, and more. But you have to post regularly.

Stuck for what to blog about? Here are some tips for novelists, but the same tips can apply to writers of nonfiction, memoirs, children's books, business books, and more.

  1. Review other novels, especially from other lesser-known novelists.
  2. Write a blog post using the voice of one of your main characters.
  3. Have that main character tell some side stories not included in the novel.
  4. Write about the setting - time and/or place. Use some of the research you did to ensure that your novel was accurate.
  5. Invite your readers to review your book. Feature their testimonials on your blog.
  6. Interview some of your readers: via Q&A text or via an Internet radio show or via a teleseminar.
  7. Podcast your book, one section at a time.
  8. Write about trends in your genre.
  9. Write about your favorite novelists, especially those that write in your genre. Include their photos and a sampling of their books.

With so much interest in the paranormal, one might like to read my book, Jeffrey and learn about Astral-travel and how it corrupts a young college student.

My debut novel, Midnight Revelations - vol. 1 in The Dark Whispers Series just received a glowing review in the Midwest Book Review. Check out this excerpt: :“The characters are so real and finely wrought… The plot is thoroughly twisted and yet very highly maintained. There is no variance or drifting with Bence’s writing. She is able to weave a complicated and intricate tale while maintaining flow and consistency. This is a great read.” --The Midwest Book Review--Delete Comment

Nothing like a good after holidays read. Try cuddling up on the sofa with An Author's Nightmare but beware of reading it after midnight. LOL It's had great reviews. Order it from my webiste: wwwljenniferrobins.com or amazon.com and other on line stores.

After many rejections, I finally got published by a traditional press. I started with a vanity but I don' exactly recomend that but it did give me a feel for having a book in print. I submitted my work to several publishers all at the same time and kept going until I hit one who liked my work. I never let rejections bother me, I just thought of them as being closer to a contract with someone. My books right now are with small presses and my next goal is to land a contract with one of the big houses. Remember to beleive and never doubt. Please be careful though, there are many scams out. Check with Preditors & Editors or Piers Anthony also you might want to join Absolute Write forum. Google these to find them There's a lot of information about publishers.

My Publishing Dreams

Yesterday I picked up Terry Whalin’s book Jumpstart Your Publishing Dreams, with the intentions to read a chapter or two before having to begin preparations for our family dinner. By bedtime I not only was finished with the book, but had chased down several web sites that Mr. Whalin has throughout his book.

Yes, my family had their dinner on time. I tried to be careful, but I’m afraid my brand new copy of Jumpstart Your Publishing Dreams has a couple smudges from my attempts to cook and read at the same time.

If any writer has any dreams of being published, I cannot recommend Terry Whalin’s books, newsletters, or blogs highly enough. Mr. Whalin has never forgotten what it was like beginning a writing career. And because of that, he is one of the few writers who has successfully published many works and still takes the time to encourage those of us who are still struggling to “make it” as writers.

I have been to writer conferences, writer workshops, writer groups, and checked out more web sites than I ever dreamed could be on the net, and the majority of what I’ve listened to and/or read from established leaders in the writing world, has done more to intimidate and discourage me than help.

It doesn’t matter where any one of us are on our path to being published, it’s still up to us to do the work, do the research, do the marketing, and jump over whatever other hurdles we face along the path.

My one dream, other than being published by a traditional publisher, is that if I ever do “make it”, I will remember. If God ever moves me into a place where I have the opportunity to help others, I want to remember. I do not want pride and arrogance to discourage or intimidate anyone struggling to be successful.

That’s why I appreciate writers and leaders such as Mr. Whalin. If you don’t have any of his books, run out and grab them up. Just don’t forget to read them and learn from them.

And, like Mr. Whalin says on page # 233, “Be persistent and keep working at it.” Even though I have days when discouragement threatens to stop my fingers from beating out the stories that are clamoring to escape my over-active brain, I keep at it. Someday I hope to be successful. I’m sixty-two now, maybe by the time I dance through one hundred, it will happen. As long as my heart beats and my fingers follow suit, I will not give up.
