What's Your Biggest Challenge with Your Book?

I'd be interested to learn what authors/publishers on this network think their biggest challenges are with their book. I wonder if there's any common, pervasive challenge we all face.

Thanks! It sounds like you've got your system down to a science! I really appreciate you getting back to me. A book in two to three days--that's pretty amazing.
Yes Steve, I would definitely appreciate you sending me the chapter. Thanks! My email address is info@endingdestructiverelationships.com. If you have trouble sending to that address please let me know.
The book I have out right now is: No Contact: Ending a Destructive Relationship. I published it via Outskirts Press. I learn something new every day about publishing. I'm proud of the book and that I got it published but definitely feel like a speck in a vast universe in terms of publishing--not complaining--just understanding that it ain't easy, is time consuming and aware that being a successful author is not typically a quick trip but rather a long journey.
Penny,

I'll send the chapter to your e-mail address, hopefully within the hour. Your book looks very good on Amazon. My wife went through a destructive relationship before we got married. I'm sure your book is helping a lot of people.
Thank you. I'm hoping it does help others--writing that book was definitely a healing experience for me. I've heard from some readers who have told me it has helped them but I need to work harder to get the word out. From what I've learned, I need to start with the local community and work my way out. That's been my biggest challenge so far--due to lack of time but I'm going to step it up. I got the chapter--thanks so much! I look forward to reading it.
trying to change names because of its my personal experiences of stumbling blocks of people and not using their name where they won't try to sue you. and creating the table of contents- trying not to create to many.
Without reading all the replies, because I know we probably say much the same thing:
1. promotion
2. time (promotion + writing = full time job)
3. balance (promotion + writing + life outside of promotion and writing = Ahhhhh!)
See a pattern here?

I think that just about covers it except with me it includes education. I find that learning how to promote has also been pretty time consuming. I heard once that doing just one thing every day = progress--it seems the problem with that is the one thing is usually completed by enlisting a ten step process.
Most of us in this business have found a system that works for us. Not all workable systems will be useful for everyone, but following the successful steps of someone who has crossed the stream using stones may be the answer for some of us. I like to think it all begins with a personal philosophy. What comes next will depend on what goals are included in the philosophy.

I got lonesome because not too much activity was happening here for some reason and I jumped over to this site to try to stir up some comments. Have I done it with the above? We will see.

If you will watch my Amazon page, you will see Christmas With Little Eagle pop out on the market within the next week. I have already received my pre-release books and they have started distribution through the local chain here. I will not be looking for another new book release for a couple months. I love these days when the phone starts ringing and someone wants to talk about my new book.

I will be looking forward to a few more comments here, don't let me down.

Well, to be published outside my country, especially on the American marketplace. Most America publishers mostly print domestic works. Foreign works are translated only if very popular, whereas in Europe is not so uncommon to publish mostly unknown English writers. English marketplace is quite protected from outside.
My biggest challenge has been exposure off the web -- I am all over the web, but for all the work I have done, it has not translated into huge sales. If you Google my name, I have over 25 pages where my names comes up with my books, articles, websites, reviews, et cetera. But his hasn't translated into sales. My daughter's story will be featured on Animal Planet's "Monsters Inside Me" show on August 25, 10pm EST. I don't know if they will mention my book, but if they do, it will be interesting to see if that translates into sales. It would be national exposure which to this point I have not had. I am also having a drawing for a free book, Children of Dreams, about her adoption and devastating illness. If you want a free copy, you can go to my website for details.

Lorilyn,

Thanks for your forthrightness about what's working and what's not. I've experienced a lot of the same things: stuff I thought would sell tons of books sold none, but other marketing efforts worked better.

Remind us all as it gets closer to August 25th! Congrats! I'm sure many of us would love to tune in!
I have no facts to back anything I am going to say in this post, so take it with a grain of salt.
Number one, with the advent of the computer and with so many companies switching to POD book selling, just about anyone can write and sell a book or two. I am going out on a limb and say that if you make money with your book or books, you are in the top ten percent of all writers, maybe the figure is less than that. Assuming this might be true, I would think that anyone who wants to be in this business, and I love it, should consider their motives for writing and what they expect to gain from it, but one more important fact would be what a writer expects to GIVE from his effort.
Number two, I think your writing should be as good as you can make it, designed for the audience of your choice, offer what can reasonably be expected by the reader and most of all, be thankful that we have this system of giving to the world a little bit of ourselves for anyone who might choose to see into our way of thinking/writing.

Why: Many people are interested in making this a better place for all of us and one way to do that is through our books. Whether it be scientific, factual, fiction, religious or art, it doesn't make any difference, the messages we pass on to our generation and future generations will have an impact what comes after we are long gone. I for one, pray and wish for a better world for my own children and my 40,000 plus students. (1,200 to 1,500 a year for thirty years.) Yes, you can see what my students think of what I taught them about life on my Facebook page because many have found me there.

Anyway, just wanted to give you a few good reasons for writing in such a tough market.
