What's Your Biggest Challenge with Your Book?

I'd be interested to learn what authors/publishers on this network think their biggest challenges are with their book. I wonder if there's any common, pervasive challenge we all face.

I hope you do send out a reminder for the 8/25/10 show. You know, you may only be one step away...
Hello Bill. My biggest challenge lately is waiting. I have been told by one publisher that they will look at publishing my novel, The Fate of Larik City, in 2011, but they have not release their calendar yet. Another problem is getting an agent or other publishing companies to even look at my manuscript as it is such a diverse crowd out there. I've lost count at how many packets I have sent out via US Mail and via email. It seems like a never ending cycle. I have already started writing the sequel to my novel and am nearing 40,000 words and going strong, but lack the time necessary to just sit down and write. My family life is put first in my life and my writing is on the back burner at times.
If you want a book publisher to get excited by your manuscript, get a bookseller excited. Any good bookseller. Someone local is just fine.

Publishers respect the opinions of booksellers.
As in local, then you mean a private bookseller? My biggest problem currently is I do not have any artwork for my cover.
how i promote my books? It is not an easy task for all the authors to promote books.
How to promote our books? I think this is common biggest challenge for most of author.

I'm with Celina - my biggest challenge is time and budget. I'm 23 and started my first job about six months ago (in marketing thankfully) but it's a constant juggle - I don't have the time to go on tours but I've managed to give a couple of talks at UK universities. Also my novel is on a very controversial subject matter so I market to a niche audience - it was written for a wider audience of open minded people, so it's hard to find the right balance between niche and mainstream. A beautiful learning process though.
My biggest problem is for people to just Listen to me!! I tell the story of the book, then they say why should we buy it, I said because its a good book for children who are 9-13 yrs old to read about what goes on in Gavins life. I fell in love with the character and his sister Alexa, who are two children I am very fond of.

I fell in love with the fairies but the people offen say, put it on cd so we can hear it, did they know that this costs alot of money too?

The biggest challenge is I paid too much to have 200 books printed. well over 5000.00 with colorful illustrations too.

That is what I am coming up against I have 100 more books to sell... I sold 100 of them to family and friends.
Would you like to buy a copy? 22.00 and if you live in florida I will pay for the sales tax as a nice gesture.

Linda, this is a good lesson for others. You paid way too much money for what you received. I think right now your biggest problem is ithe book is overpriced. Things will only sell for what the market will bear.

I would cut the price down, take the loss, and chaulk it up to experience. Next time you will be all the wiser.
Lorilyn,

Are you still scheduled to have your book mentioned on a TV segment tomorrow night? Please keep us updated and let us know how it goes!

Maybe you could sell your books at a local community event like an art fair or holiday event? You would get local exposure that can lead to other things. I've been learning here on this site that local exposure is so valuable--especially for new writers like myself.
I like the local colleges for putting my books before the public. One of our colleges has a business product day which I like about as good as any and it does sell books. Many people give out samples of health food, and other products before they sell something. I have been lucky every time to get a table right down in the middle of everything. For some reasons, kids like books.
