What do you put on them? I figured I'd put my book cover on the front and the synopsis and ordering info on the back. It'd be used more as a promo piece that as a mailing.

I've seen others just use the cover on the front, their web address and the back side for the regular postcard stuff. What do you think works best?

I'm attaching the cover image to give you an idea.

I don't konw how to post the file I created at Vista Print that shows the whole thing Sorry.
I figured this out. I'm going with a postcard that has the synopsis.
Glad you figured this out. These are often called "play bills" in the music world. They usually DO NOT have room for mailing, but simply act as mini flyers that are left all over the place, on bulletin boards, in coffee shops, on counters of bookstores, in your book, etc. 8 x 11.5 posters (or bigger) with your cover and some synopsis/ordering information are also great; they can often go in the same places.
Peter,
Thank you for your insight. I hadn't thought about the local coffee shops. Good idea.

Hi Julie,
I did exactly what you're planning to do with your book postcard and I use my postcards (4x6) to hand out vs. mailing them. I think having the synposis on the back helps 'sell' the book to the reader. Just putting the website information on the card leaves the chance of the person not even taking the time to visit the site to learn more about the book. It's always nice to have a preview of a product before you buy it.

Best wishes in your promotion endeavors!

Alicia,
Thanks for you sharing your perspective. How have the postcards worked out for you?

Julie
They have been a good promo tool. I carry some in my car and purse to I can hand them out whenever the opportunity strikes. Thanks to an idea I found on this network, I've also started leaving them anywhere I can (bulletin boards, restrooms, airplane...when I was traveling, I slipped them in the back of the seat where the magazines are, etc.) The size of mine are 4x6, so they are easier to handle than 8x10 fliers. The return on the investment is not so easy to measure because I don't know who actually purchased the book because they saw the postcard.

If you have room for a bio, I would highly recommend adding that, too!

I have my book's title, ISBN#, website, contact information, the synopsis and a short bio on mine. I do use them for mailing, as my bookmarks have virtually the same thing and I hand those out at signings. If you have any blurbs, reviews, or endorsements, find a way to put a snippet of the best one on there as well.

Hope that helps!
HI L. Diane Wolfe,
Thank you for your advice. Is this size bio too long?

L. Diane Wolfe,
Would you be wiling to show me your postcard? Maybe email the graphics file if possible. I'd really like to take a look at it. My email is julie@julieannshapiro.com.
Thanks.

Julie
I can email you the backside!
I don't think the bio is too long - just a matter of if it all fits on the postcard!
This sounds good, but just one thought: are you promoting your book or you as an author? The two are slightly different and you may want to take out some of the info on your short stories/essays and add more on the book itself (if that is the route you are looking to go). Or just make two different ones. Also, remember, simpler is often better and bigger fonts are also good. On a 4x6 you can cram a lot of information, but also you can keep it simple and try and point them to your website. All the other suggestions are also good however.
