51 Ways to Blog as a Novelist

We all know that blogging is one of the best ways to get attention in today's Internet world. A blog is a godsend to your website, bringing it traffic, fans, and more. But you have to post regularly.

Stuck for what to blog about? Here are some tips for novelists, but the same tips can apply to writers of nonfiction, memoirs, children's books, business books, and more.

  1. Review other novels, especially from other lesser-known novelists.
  2. Write a blog post using the voice of one of your main characters.
  3. Have that main character tell some side stories not included in the novel.
  4. Write about the setting - time and/or place. Use some of the research you did to ensure that your novel was accurate.
  5. Invite your readers to review your book. Feature their testimonials on your blog.
  6. Interview some of your readers: via Q&A text or via an Internet radio show or via a teleseminar.
  7. Podcast your book, one section at a time.
  8. Write about trends in your genre.
  9. Write about your favorite novelists, especially those that write in your genre. Include their photos and a sampling of their books.

I will be in Chicago Oct 19-20 for a taping of the Oprah Winfrey Show. Please hold me in the light that and affirm with me Thanking God that I will put my book into Oprah Winfrey hands and I will be a guest interviewed by Oprah herself.

Hi! I just released my self-published novel, Dauntless Homecoming, in paperback and Kindle editions on Amazon.

Sometimes, the most alien place you can go is back home again.

Set hundreds of years in the future, it tells the story of the crew of The Dauntless, one of mankind's first interstellar ships, as they return to Earth. It took them hundreds of years, Earth time, to make their voyage. When they returned, they thought their adventuring was over, but it was only then that their real journey began. The battles now were within each one of them, as they struggled to carve out a place they could call “home” in this strange new society.

Although the novel is set in a very high-tech future world, the underlying quest is a spiritual one, reminiscent of C.S. Lewis in his novel, Out of the Silent Planet, or of Clifford D. Simak in his novels such as Way Station.

I have more details on it in my web site.

So far, getting people to read it and review it has been a challenge. Out of literally hundreds of press releases sent out, exactly two requests for review copies have been received, neither of them reaching my core readership. Part of that might be the strangeness of the Christian Science Fiction genre.

I have a new book coming out in the next couple of weeks. It's my first children's book for ages 8-12, but could be enjoyed by young adults too. It's an adventure fantasy that takes place in Ireland. A boy and a leprechaun go on a quest to rescue the rainbow and pot o' gold that's been stolen by trolls. You can read an excerpt at my website:
