Great advice, Paradise. One thing I know is you can lose your shirt in marketing and not sell a single book. It puts authors, particularly new ones, at a disadvantage. You just have to work hard at building a platform. Add a lot of Facebook author contacts, twitter, blog, and comment on other people's blogs. It's a process. Don't lose heart. Nothing worth having ever comes easy; sacrifice is the price for all meaningful endeavors. You can also look at it from the perspective that never before has the opportunity been so great for an unknown author to have his writings seen by others. The Internet has made what was a few years ago impossible easy. You hit the send button on the computer keyboard and your latest blog, comments, like here, or picture goes all over the world. I am glad I am an author at such a time as this. The possibilities are so great for those who don't give up. And if you don't try, you will never know how far you can go with it. Good luck!

My problem is spending more on promoting than I'm making. There's only so many free places where you can promote your novels.

There are tons of free ways to market a novel. If you are paying for listings, you are on the wrong sites.

MARKETING and PROMOTION!!! I never expected to have such a heavy load of doing marketing and promotion after being accepted by a publisher. After all, isn't this what an in-house marketing/sales team is for?
With my husband and daughter's help, we created book covers, bookmarks, videos, posters, flyers, website, and list goes on. It got to the point I decided to go self and leave my publisher. If I'm doing this much work, I might as well get paid better than a few cents on the dollar royalties.

Thanks to both. :) It's all homemade. My husband put it together and my daughter did all the artwork for the characters and videos.

We have a family affair too. My wife is a first reader, my daughter is first editor and her husband (my son in law) is my second editor. They are expensive. These two kids are both English majors and both graduated top of their class, but hey what can I say, they are young yet. Dr M

I went to school in Missouri with a family of Lambs. I seem to recall a girl in grade school in Illinois with that last name too.
I have four children, all authors. It runs in the family.
