BEING YOUR OWN PUBLISHER

Yeah, yeah, there's new tech parameters and a paradigm shift and all that.

But the important thing is that there are (and always have been) alternatives to writing something then trying to sell the rights to a publishing company. This group is to explore these areas of self-owned publishing biz.

Some writers have niche books, some have special needs (like texts for their seminars), some are just too entrepreneurial to sell of their own inspirations. And some just want to see something in print.

There is a spectrum these days, from big publishers through the new, small POD publishers, to using publishing services like lulu.com or iuniverse, to printing yourself and selling online, to release of downloadable mp3 "podcasts" or pdf manuals.

If you have expertise, experience, or questions in this area, don't be shy about posting them here. It's a rapidly expanding field and nobody knows everything about it, but lots of us are learning enough to do what we want to do and successfully get it across the counter.

My first novel The Waste Land has been shortlisted for The People's Book Prize, a literary prize which is chosen by readers' votes. As a self-published writer I would enormously appreciate the support of other self-published writers and I attach the following instructions in case you are kind enough to take the trouble to vote:

  1. follow the link http://peoplesbookprize.com/register.php  to register by entering your name, email address, the anti-spam code and click ‘Submit’
  2. you will receive by return an email with a password; copy the password from the email
  3. go to http://www.peoplesbookprize.com/book.php?id=713
  4. scroll to the bottom of the page, enter the anti-spam code where indicated, type your email address and paste your password into the appropriate boxes
  5. check the box to vote and click submit

I also have a book shortlisted in the non-fiction category - Angels, Dragons and Vultures, a guide to venture capital for entrepreneurs. So if you feel like voting for that too, better still (but it is not self-published so i have no excuse to ask!)

"Beware the Winds of Doctrine" by Author Henry Miranda is a call to stand fast upon the Holy Word of God, the Bible. As many preach the Gospel, we as Christians are called to be diligent students of the Word of God. By doing this we are taking hold of the truth, which enables us to have the knowledge not to be deceived. Many false teachers and preachers evangelize a Gospel that has turned away from the true Word of God. Henry Miranda in his book exhorts the born again Christian to study diligently the Word of God in this hour to know the truth and to not be led away by false doctrines.

As winds blow from one place to another, so the author writes that preachers have turned from the Word of God to become people pleasers. Many preach not the true Word of God, but preach what people want to hear. We as Christians are called to live a godly, holy life of repentance, turning away from sin and the lure of the world. Knowing your Bible will not only keep you from being deceived by false doctrines, but will also lead the reader on a path to living a life in Christ.

False religion is a tool of man and Satan that can keep one bound in false doctrine. therefore, we must know the Gospel of Jesus Christ only and daily live out the Gospel in our own lives as followers of Christ.

The author backs up his work by many scripture references. This book is suggested to be very helpful for the new Christian. Henry Miranda urges others to study the entire Bible in context and to read fully the entire gospel of Jesus Christ. We are to test the teachings we hear, to make sure they line up according to scripture. Jesus warned that there would be many false teachers and false prophets and warned us to be aware of wolves in sheep's clothing. The author is sounding the call to all Christians to study according to the Bible and not to believe everything that is preached from the pulpit.

Henry Miranda is a Bible teacher, Author, Writer and Evangelist. He lives in Southern California and has four daughters. He has written five books to include:

Eternal Life, Fellowship with God: Bright Lights on the Path Leading to Jesus, You've Been Warned, The Path to Eternal Life and his current book, Beware the Winds of Doctrine. You can learn more about Henry Miranda and his books by visiting Author Henry Miranda.

"Blessings of Knighthood" by Author Brian Daniel Starr is an intricate and extensive educational book that divulges the secrets of the Christian/Judea religion that are not visible to the average Christian, who without a study of genealogy and knighthood, would have no knowledge of the subject. As the author states, "All the secrets of the known religion are no doubt in the Vatican and are known to different families and orders." This book will uncover the subject of Knighthood, Saints, genealogy of the ancient Israelite Priests and biblical figures while giving a comprehensive look at the nine most worthy warriors of times past from three eras: the Christian era, the Hebrew (Biblical) era and from three other cultures-Roman, Greek and Macedonian. This unique work is a valuable and highly informative read if one views history and genealogy, knighthood and sainthood in the right light, holding to the perception that these subjects play a very important part in our world, our history and our religions.

With careful observation and exhaustive research that is available in this modern day and would not be obtainable in the past as the author states, Brian Daniel Starr has left a legacy of genealogy going back to the mysteries of the Priest and the Knight, discussing the Crucifixion of the Lord, giving an overview of the branches of Jerusalem and the first century to the Five Generation Genesis of God to include the Davidic, Aaronic Levitical, the Gamalas and the Arimethia lineages. The author continues his research to traverse this wide span of knowledge into charts and graphs, giving the reader a visual to the diverse landscape of genealogy. The author also discusses the descendants of Mary, the daughters of Mary, the sons of Mary and gives a rather extensive roll call of the all the famous Saints of Old as named in the Bible such as Mary, Joseph and James.

Concisely, the book reveals the lineage of the High Priests of Israel to include the lives from Ahab and Jehokim and follows with the ancient lineage of biblical figures such as Sarah, Abraham and Solomon's marriage to the Queen of Egypt. This research also takes a look at some from the time of King David until the time of war of the Jews with Rome discussing how the Levitical line of Levi, the Israelite's descendants, married into the house of David. The author systematically weaves in lineage from the Israelite Levi and continues by discussing the Order of Knighthood. Additional Saints from early Christianity are also included, as well as the lineage in some Greek mythology and ancient figures such as Alexander the Great, Julius Caesar, and Sir Hector.

The author includes the apostle guardianship, the Law of the Lord, Law in the Knight and crimes and the prevention of them to include the blending of the religions Hebrew, Greek and Roman. This work is an exceptional research project that took many, many hours to complete. This read is a highly educational, thought provoking work, challenging the reader to unlock and know the secrets of histories past genealogy and lineage of the Christian/Judea religion.

Since I self-published my ebook in KDP (Kindle Direct Publishing), one of the ways that I have to market my book is that I get 5 days during a 6 month period to offer it for FREE. I chose today and tomorrow, 2/28 and 2/29 as the first 2 of those days. I would love for you to get my book The Gamer Generation: Reaping the Benefits of Video Games for free.

The results!

My Kindle Nation Daily, ebook of the day sponsorship is over and I must say, it wasn’t as successful as I’d hoped. However, sales did increase and as I said before, I also got lots of exposure. So, I decided to buy two more sponsorships. One for DROP OUT and one for SILENT INVASION. Since KND now allows you to pick your dates I figured I can’t lose. This last sponsorship was on a Thursday, but the new ones I have booked are for Friday June 16th, which I figure will be the very beginning of summer break for a lot of kids so they’ll be looking for books. I also booked for June 29th which is the Friday before Fourth of July weekend. Those dates were open so I snatched them up as quickly as I could. I do recommend KND mainly for the exposure, but still, the best promotional effort so far has been the free book giveaway on Kindle Direct Publishing. It has resulted in many more paid sales mainly because I figure readers like the book and want to read another one written by me. Whatever the reason, months of daily promotion is starting to pay off. My royalties are high enough this month that I need to get a tax ID number. My total downloads for the month of January and up until February 14th (both free and sold copies) is 3,425. I’m pretty psyched about that. Since October, I’ve been selling about thirty percent more books each month. Next, on KDP I’m putting out my paperback DEGENERATES. That will bring to six the number of my books now available through KDP. I hope to add FROSTPROOF and PULP by spring. Even though both of those books are available now on Kindle, iuniverse charges way too much for copies. I’ll give readers the option of buying it direct for $1.25. Strangely enough, DROP OUT is my second best selling book behind AFTER. I guess the inspirational theme is really affecting people.

My next novel, IMAGINATION is coming along nicely and I should have a good first draft completed by early spring.

I just published my first book about the benefits of video games for everyone - kids, adults and society - The Gamer Generation: Reaping the Benefits of Video Games. It is eBook only and right now is only available for the Kindle as I am trying the new KDP for the first 6 months. I did all the self publishing myself so if you have any questions on that or on KDP (Kindle Direct Publishing) let me know.
