The Book Marketing Network

For book/ebook authors, publishers, & self-publishers

I'd like to start a new forum where people can talk about what's working for you right now in marketing your book.

I think this will help other authors to prioritize their activities if they can find out what's working for other people. This would be especially valuable to new authors.

I've share the hottest tool that I'm using right now. And that's Twitter. As you will note on the main page of this Book Marketing Network website, both my http://www.bookmarket.com website and this network have been rising in Alexa ranks (and visits) because of my use of Twitter.

Hi, What's working for me is helping to promote other indie authors that write in my genres of Fantasy, Horror and Science Fiction.

This week on my book review blog entitled What I Am Reading, I am reviewing The World Behind the World by Elizabeth Foshee.

Thanks everbody!

Enjoy :-)

My daughter just brought it to my attention that I should target people a bit younger than 16. She was thinking 13 because that is when kids are starting to become interested in the horror genre. Lan, I know you stated that you liked Harry Potter and Eragon which were supposed to be for kids. But here is something to think about.

You liked them and you are NOT a kid. That means there are others who are not kids that also liked them. I know of at least one lady in her 70's that is totally gonzo about Harry Potter.

The story you are writing could be for kids, but it could also appeal to any age group. I like it and I'm 41! lol

The reason I'm picking an age group is because they are the most likely to be into horror. So who do you think is most likely to be into your type of writing? What kind of people would like Joleen's writing?

We know for a fact that there about a billion fans of the Vampire Diaries and Twilight was a massive hit for a while. And the fans were all ages. There are a ton of people that are fans of dragons as well and other ancient mythy creatures.

So I guess when I'm talking about age groups, I'm thinking about targeting those most likely to be into what I write. Does that make sense?

I think she's right. I loved horror at 13, and actually younger. I remember our library had two books of "scary stories" (I forget the names) and starting at 8 on I used to check them out regularly. Kids love ghosts and such, or at least they did when I was a kid. I admit, that has been a few years ;)

Okay, cool-I will try to come up with an age range demographic.

I didn't think some of the stuff in my book would be appropriate for a 13 year old, but looking back on my own childhood-I guess I was watching Friday the 13th and Nightmare On Elm Street by then.

I think I also had started reading Stephen King by that age, as well.

I guess I was thinking more in terms of genre demographic than age range. My book would be largely classified as Dark Fantasy, but there is also a slight science fiction theme in it that will become more and more prevalent further in the book and especially in the series, Also, it occurred to me that I may have even created a kind of comic book super hero-and so, I might even be able to market it to fans of Marvel and DC.

Ooo that's a cool Idea Lan. I can totally see your book as a Graphic Novel someday. Joleene, you already have the artistic talent to turn your books into GNs if you should choose to do so. I don't know, maybe that's a good idea.

I know Dean Koontz has at least one book of his in GN form and he's also set up a couple of his books to be available as eBooks only. So that kinda tells you where the wave of the future is heading eh?

I was thinking that my eBook would make a great show like the Fantastic 4 lol.

P.S.

I was watching Chiller Theater when I was 8 years old lol I waited till my mom was asleep heheh.

Yeah, that would totally work with Dani's super power :-)

I got Marilyn the first four volumes of American Vampire, a graphic novel series by Stephen King. She is almost through the first one and is enjoying it immensely.

I know you are not a big fan of zombies, but Marilyn got me hooked on The Walking Dead graphic novels as well as the television show. If I had to pick one over the other, I would have to chose the graphic novel. They are awesome!

I almost started it once, but it's the time constraints. Manga takes a long time to script out and then draw - it's at least an hour a page and sometimes more.

I think Koontz is right. people like ebooks because they're cheap, easy, and instant. You click buy and BOOM you're reading the book. No waiting.

Oh I see, I hadn't thought of the fact that it could take a while to make a graphic novel. Its still a cool idea :D maybe someday when you're all rich and famous!

I haven't got one yet, but Kindle keeps telling me that I can get a free comic download for my Paper White.

I knew the device was capable of displaying graphics, but it wasn't until I got that email from them that I realized the comic books and graphic novels were also very popular as ebooks.

Might be worth doing eventually :-)

Joleene, I like how you have put an illustration at the beginning of each chapter in your Vampire Morsels-that might be a good segue to comics, graphic novels or manga :-)

Yeah, I was reading and watching those kind of things by 13 too, and they claim modern kids are more "sophisticated" than we were (No idea if this is actually true or not, LOL!)

lol Hate to break it to all the kids out there, but they aren't any more sophisticated than we were back in the day. They just like to THINK they are more modern then us "old folk" lolol.
