I love the covers my publisher has created for my stories. How much does a cover influence you when you pick up a book by an unfamiliar author?

If I'm in the store setting, the cover is everything. If there are tables filled with books, something has to catch my eye or I'll end up walking past. However, if I'm reviewing by topic or title, let's say for example on Amazon... then it isn't as important. I will rely more on the rating from others and use the surprise me browser to get a feel of how it reads.
A beautiful cover does catch my eye, but authors usually have little say about what their cover actually looks like. I've been fortunate. My publisher sends out an author questionaire, requesting information about the story, what the main characters look like, if I have any ideas about scenes that lend themselves to cover treatment. You want the cover to be a promise to the reader about the sort of book they're getting. That's why my sexier Emily Bryan romances are "clinches," and the more historical MAIDENSONG and ERINSONG have a more mainstream style cover. SILK DREAMS is sort of a hybrid. It's grounded in history but in a sexier setting--a harem. I think the Dorchester art department did a great job of compromising on that one.

I know in my own experience I do judge a book by its cover..If i like the cover that matches the story I will more than likely get the book..There is one thing that has been disapointing me is the cover of the book did not match what the book was even like at all far out there..I want to let Authors Know when you have a publisher make sure the cover art matches what the story is telling us..I know a publisher that makes sures her Covers matches what the book is about..Let me know if there is any discussions on cover art..
Great point! I couldn't agree more. Nothing worse than an over promise...
Another thing I look for is the opening. The beginning of a book is the author's contract with the reader--a taste of her writing style and setting the tone of the work. Nothing is more disappointing than to have a writer do a "bait and switch." So my goal is to begin as I mean to continue. If it's serious, I start serious. If the tale's light-hearted, I try to begin with a smile. If it's sexy, I make sure the senses are engaged immediately.

Along with covers, have you ever viewed a book trailer? If so , did it make you want to buy the book? If you'd like to see mine, please visit http://www.veoh.com/channels/emilybryan and let me know what you think. Enjoy!
Hmmm.
I don't think the trailers do much for me in general.
It's a toss-up between the cover design and the title. One or both has to grab me before I pick up the book to read the synopsis.
How rare is it for the writer to make their own cover art? I'm an artist and a writer. But would a publisher let me do that?

On the topic of covers, I don't like it when they show the persons face. When reading I like to try and picture them for myself. If the cover has them on there and that's not how I would have pictured them it throws me off.
Interesting question. Off hand, I'd say it depends on how good the artwork is. No one would pay for mine. However, seems to me the cover for MM Kaye's THE FAR PAVILIONS was based on a canvas the author did herself. Now whether it was actually her painting or the designers used elements of her work to design the cover, I'm not sure.

I hear you about faces. But headless torsos don't do much for me either LOL!
Ooooh, that depends on the torso. LOL
LOL. I guess that's true. But when I think of not showing a face I can think of a few way's that would be beautiful and eye catching. I guess it might just take a little bit more work.
You're right, Amy. I have seen some lovely covers that don't show the faces.
