Need A Resource to Guide Me with Word for Self-Publishing

I am formatting my book for self-publishing. Does anyone know of a guide that will help me figure out how to format my material in Microsoft Word? I am having a hard time figuring out how to use the features in Word to format the book properly for self-publishing. Maybe I need Microsoft Word for Self-Publishers for Dummies!

I formatted my book in Word. I used Dan Poynter's book, The Self-Publishing Manual, for my margins. I learned how to make sections rather than just pages. That way I could change the headers and footers depending on where I was in the book. Some pages you want numbers on, some you don't. Some pages you want different headers on. Some you don't want any headers at all. It takes some playing with but after you get the hang of it, it makes the work go a lot faster.

Good Luck!
Well, I would not do anything without reading Aaron Shepard's book Perfect Pages. This is THE resource for using Word for book layout and publishing, especially through LSI.

Hey, Peter,

Where was that book when I needed it? *grin* I will look for it now tho for my next books. Thanks for the info!

Good to see your name on the boards again. I wondered what had happened to you.
David,

The comments from those who have replied to this discussion are good. I did not know of the resource that Peter mentioned but I will check it out. When I was writing my book I learned to use the resources of Microsoft word tools. In the drop down menu in word there is a place for page setup. This is where you establish your margins. In the drop down menu under format there are various choices that would help you to learn the format process by trying different setups. It is important to remember that the format for your manuscript may depend upon the publisher you use. In terms of self-publishing I have a publisher that I use who has defined instructions in the page margins. They have different choices for margins but they identify what the normal margin requirements that are typically used.

Hope this helps.
Hi David,

I just finished getting mine ready and I found most of the information I needed in Word 2007 For Dummies. I had a pretty strong background in Word, but this book has all sections laid out in an easy to follow format in case you're not familiar with Word.

Best of luck to you,
Brian
