This is Sgt. Bill Davis, Beaumont, Texas Police Department (retired) and author of the true crime novel, So Innocent, Yet So Dead. I was one of the detectives that investigated this horrible crime. The child, ten-year-old, Falyssa Van Winkle, was kidnapped at a flea market in Beaumont in front of several hundred people who did not realize she was being kidnapped. Later that day, the suspect, Rex Powell, raped and murdered Falyssa and then dumped her body under a creek bridge in southern Newton County, Texas. Through some miraculous events, we were able to develop sufficient leads to procure a warrant, and I handcuffed Rex Powell within forty hours of Falyssa’s disappearance. After Powell was convicted and sentenced to death, I began writing the book. It was published in hard copy December 12, 1998, and has sold over 30,000 copies. Now, my book is also available, not only in hard copy, but also on Amazon.com. I hope your heart will be touched by my e-book, So Innocent, Yet So Dead, as I try and put you in my “shoes” as the crime was investigated and tried in a court of law. This book was written during the course of Rex Powell sitting on death row. After witnessing Powell’s final minutes and seconds that led to his execution, the final chapter was written. This final edition of my book became available in hard copy in 2003. My hope is that through you reading this book, children’s lives will be saved. Our greatest tool in protecting our children is awareness. I believe that reading this book will heighten your awareness and increase your ability to protect our greatest resource, our children. Thank you.
