We have requests to send E Books, Kindle or other brands, we do not review electronic books. They do not have the feel that regular book has. Hardcover books are expensive to make and sell for writers who are doing self publishing and we understand that. However, after having experienced a number of different books and styles a few tips:
Reviews do not want galleys or un-edited books from self published authors. Try to get decent copies which have been cleaned up to them.
Books which have been published by regular book publishers are going to carry some baggage with regard to their needing a few things cleaned before final publication. Even books by self-published authors will have some errors and these re expected. However, when the book is just thrown together and in an effort to get it out there it is published too soon, this diminishes what could have otherwise been a good book.
Paperback are acceptable if they and their hard cover relatives are no more than a year old.
Recently I read an article which stated that the best life of a book is in the 6 weeks immediately after its initial distribution to book stores. Now, they were refering to regular publishing houses and not self pubs. I would guess the beginning life of a self pub is a bit longer as the author is finding out how to best distribute the book. Just be careful not to go into two or three years down the road and still treat it as a new book.
Be sure to mention who you are and where the post is coming from. We get a lot of books direct from the publishers as well as from the authors directly.
Thanks,
and good writing,
Clark
