I am an African American, fifty something male. I have worked in the area of race relations for over twenty years focusing primarily on the Black/White dynamic. I am completing a master's degree program in spiritual psychology. (This is not related to a divinity degree or a particular religion)
My book is titled "Seeing Heaven in the Face of Black Men." The essence of my book can be described as follows: How is a parent able to forgive the murderer of their child? How could a Tutsi or Hutu in Rwanda reconcile with the perpetrator who maimed or slaughtered their family? Where does the capacity come from to act in such a noble fashion? I will answer it this way. Spirituality, as distinct from a particular religion, is the mettle that has long been drawn upon to transform horrific pain into the strength to move forward. It is a capacity, beyond emotional strength, grounded in an abiding depth of consciousness. It recognizes the interconnectedness of all human beings and resonates with the deeper meanings of life.
Focusing on the Black/White Divide, Seeing Heaven in the Face of Black Men, contends that spirituality is the missing ingredient in this country’s battle with racial injustice. When tapped it will allow both groups to face the pain and anger surrounding this issue, transcend and transform it and create the climate and foundation for real healing. The power of spirituality is capable of creating the will, motivation and perspective to extract Blacks and Whites from the emotional boxing match they are engaged in.
Through a “day in the life journey”, Seeing Heaven in the Face of Black Men expresses candidly and passionately, the kinds of day to day realities that remain a part of America’s racial landscape. Its frankness is matched by its hope that Blacks and Whites can tap their common spirituality and create a “new dance” where both are equal partners. As important, it offers a new metaphorical image to replace the prevalent stereotypes of Black men. The image of heaven conveys dignity, strength and nobility.
Read the book in its entirety with an open heart, capture it intent and commit yourself tapping your own spirituality. I invite you to walk with me on this journey.
