The cross was the instrument of the Roman Empire's judicial system, which extended to Palestine/Jerusalem. Jesus was crucified (a term of the Romans, meaning nailed to a cross and hung to die on it, according to an exacted punishment) by the Roman government, as judged by false charges brought against him by religious leaders in Jerusalem. Jesus endured the cross, despising its shame, for the joy set before Him.
By Jesus' death on the cross of shame, a cross of criminals, Jesus bought and gave Redemption from sin and hell: God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes on Him should not perish but have everlasting life (John 3:16). The shame of the cross was transformed because the Perfect Lamb, without blemish, gave Himself in obedience, and was the Substitution for sinners. Jesus, Son of God, being perfect, as God, and without sin, took the sins of the world upon Himself, as the Father had sent Him to do.
Jesus was born, for He was sent to serve, minister, heal, teach, suffer arrest, torture, and death on a cross for the sins of the world. He was to rise on the third day, which He did, and soon was taken into Heaven where He sat down at the right hand of the God. The cross of Christ was integral to all of this, and thereon God proved His love and redeeming power, which is far above all earthly powers. This is reality and mystery combined. Therefore, those who are saved by faith in Jesus Christ, and who follow Him in personal relationship by the Holy Spirit, honor the meaning of the cross, where the Beloved of God and of Man laid down His life, willingly, a sacrifice and substitute for many - "By His stripes we were healed."
