The Book Marketing Network

For book/ebook authors, publishers, & self-publishers

Hi everyone:

Wondering how people handle these requests.

I have a book being released in April (Run Your Business Like a Fortune 100: 7 Principles for Boosting PROFITS. John Wiley & Sons, 2009).

People are coming out of everywhere, asking me to speak (for free). Since they will be recording these, do I ask for anything in return? Do I want my material to be used/reviewed by others? Should I be keeping any proprietary? Should I be charging? I'd love to hear options and your experiences.

Thanks, Rosalie

My advice - if it's a book reading: DON'T RECORD. If you're just speaking (in a more generalized way, not quoting, etc.), then it's no different than having an interview, so go ahead and let them record. Maybe make a provision that you get to listen to/edit any recording, but otherwise, what the heck. Publicity is the goal, so any way that word of your book gets out, you win.
(My question, though, if you've got the time: how did these people find out in advance that your book was coming out? Ours is coming out soon, & any tips on getting that advance publicity would be great! Thanks!)
I think most writers to internet radio shows for free because it is good exposure for them.
I am working towards getting paid speaking engagments at colleges.
