This and other cases lead their lieutenant to partner Helen Williams with her co-detective, Stephen Patterson. They venture to the speakeasy. Helen encounters a British gentleman. They are attracted to one another. The detective wants to focus on the case. Thaddeus focuses on her. He rescues her away from the speakeasy on more than one night when violent ensues. Their attraction is realized into genuine affection. Williams still must solve the case. Thaddeus will only allow it if he is at her side. The detectives' investigations lead to a stand off.
