Something About Me and My Book:
Deanna Salser has professionally been a mechanical drafter for the last thirty-five years. She is enamored with reading, drawing, and sculpting but she has always had a way with words and now writing has become her newest passion. She has been entering writing contests, hoping to gain some recognition for her voice, which she has just discovered due to her first project being accepted for publication. In addition to the novel, she recently published several flash fiction pieces in various online magazines. Her life experience, coupled with her lively sense of humor, make reading her work a pleasure.
Eight-year-old Carrie Stevens fails to come home on the bus one day after a disagreement with her mother. This sparks a search for the child, which includes a media storm the entire county will remember for decades. Four years previous, six-year-old Tommy disappeared between his bus stop and his house, which is situated several blocks away from the Stevens'. When Carrie’s mother, Debbie reacts in fear, keeping her daughter on a tight leash at all times, Carrie fights the restriction by taking every opportunity to find solitude away from prying eyes. This leads her into danger as she walks to the mall unsupervised with some of her friends. Leaving them to call her mom, she steps away by herself, making her vulnerable to a watching pedophile. Phillip Allen Simpson had a traumatic experience as a child. As a result, his mind is broken, prompting him to take his insanity out on those weaker than himself. He enjoys torturing them as a means of burying his feelings of rage and betrayal and correcting the inadequacies he sees within himself. As he lurks in the shadows waiting for an opening, Phillip becomes enamored with the girls and seeing his chance, grabs Carrie while her friend’s backs are turned. Thinking she had gone home, her friends all returned to their lives without telling anyone what happened. Six years later Carrie, now called Beth by her kidnapper, clings desperately to life as he neglects her basic care. She is often left without food or warmth for days in the cave-like basement room where he keeps her. Despair is her constant companion as she spends her days alone, sleeping most of the time. Debbie wonders if the stress and sorrow are starting to send her over the edge as she begins to have a series of paranormal experiences involving the last drawing her daughter had given her before she was taken. Her life has limped along after Carrie’s disappearance and she has very little hope left until the case falls into the hands of an expert in charge of clearing cold cases. Detective George Callaghan begins by turning up clues his predecessor had missed, intriguing himself and Carrie’s mother, who quickly gets on board with his new investigation. Armed with the information previously undiscovered, he pays a visit to Phillip’s property on a hunch, ending up finding evidence of the presence of children at his house.
