Mark Salvatore, a resident of Harlingen, teaches English in Brownsville, Texas. Mark, originally from New York, raised in California, and educated, in part, in New Mexico, began his teaching career at the Pan American International School (PAIS) in Paraguay, South America, shortly after completing his Peace Corps Service as a volunteer in health education and environmental sanitation. After five years at PAIS, Mark and his family moved to the Lower Rio Grande Valley where he worked as a technical writer for a few years before returning to teaching. Mark has worked as a land surveyor, drafter, and hydrographer. He enjoys writing, reading history and historical fiction, automobile travel and camping with his family, swimming, bicycling, and attending soccer games.
In the young adult novel, Labeled, by Mark Salvatore, we meet Vinnie in high school where he does not attend classes. His path leads from untimely deaths, changes of schools, a first love, to problems academically, emotionally and socially. He reels from a failed first encounter with a girl. He reads philosophical works and experiments with alcohol and other drugs. He hitchhikes across the country with two friends. Upon his return he’s pressured at school. Psychologists and the school administration recommend that Vinnie be transferred to a special school, which he never attends. As Vinnie descends he awakens to the fact that he must change.
