2014 Nationa Noval Writing Month Begins!

I decided it was time to take my outline and short scene I did for a writing workshop and finally make it into the novel I've talked about for many years. What makes this novel so special to me isn't the fact I'm doing it for…

Back Story

Though any remark from an agent or editor was appreciated as a feedback, and critique, one of the most painful remarks was "need character development." Much of these referred to my short story submissions in the 1990s, on several of the many past rejections. The writing into the story of the "back story" is tricky. When and where does one feed the bits and snippets in? I am reading a new novel, "The Vesuvius Isotope," a first person narration, which uses past flashbacks in…

Exciting Changes

Exciting changes have been forced on website changes for this member and writer. Perhaps I am trying to do too much. Anyway, I had to make a decision on whether to continue two other websites that were not getting much traffic, and yet the costs were going up each year, which  …………. Well, it was nuts to stay there. The two new sites are up at the links below in the signature…

How to Make Money Writing Nonfiction Articles

If you are a nonfiction writer, there are seemingly endless resources for publishing articles. I say "seemingly" because numbers are deceptive. Getting a nonfiction article published in a reputable magazine can be just as daunting as publishing a short story in The Atlantic. Unless you are a recognized expert in your field, the competition will be fierce.

But…

Exploring a Small Town Celebration

July 27th would normally be a scorching hot day in Iowa. We expect that, after years of experience. Hot temperatures go hand in hand with a summer town celebration or a county fair. Not this time. Thanks to a cold front, Canadian air fanned Iowa today. Low dark clouds hid the sun, keeping the temperature in the sixties.

My husband and I went to Dysart, Iowa, about thirty miles from us, for their Iron Days celebration. As a writer, I’m always looking for details, humorous or otherwise,…

On Writing: Why I Don't Listen to Stephen King

Normally, I don’t like to give people advice about writing. I prefer to offer advice on how to get your writing published, how to deal with the publishing world, how to be a success. I leave the writing instruction manual to other less qualified people – by which I mean famous writers.…
