Who influenced you most in your life?

It's hard to pick just one. In my early years, it was definitely my mom. I've never known a more loving person. As an adult, I've been greatly influenced by James MacDonald and Phil Vischer. Pastor MacDonald always seems to speak to my soul when he preaches and he constantly challenges me to be a better Christian. And Phil Vischer inspires me, from the building of the VeggieTales empire to losing it and starting a whole new company. I love stories of God using imperfect humans to do great things for His glory.

What do you think makes a good story?

A good story must have several elements. Compelling characters who are easy to love but still have flaws. Balanced rhythm and pace. A few twists of the unexpected. And definitely some kissing between the male and female protagonist!

Where does your inspiration come from?

My inspiration comes from several places. Usually ideas strike me after reading a good book or watching an interesting movie, almost as if I am making a sequel. Something about enjoying a good story makes me want to run to the computer and create something of my own. Music is also a big inspiration. When I hear a song that moves me, I write stories around the words in the song.

Do you use events from your own life?

Yes. For my western novels, I can relate more than most because I grew up in a home with no electricity. I know how to chop and stack wood, draw water from a well with buckets and rope, and trim the wick on a kerosene lamp. For years I cooked on a wood stove, heating water for bathes and constantly turning food so it would cook evenly. Those days feel like so long ago. I also use little situations, such as things my kids have said or quirks people have.

Why do you write?

I write for several reasons. I believe God called me to be an author. And I believe there is immense power in storytelling that speaks to every human heart. Grammar has always seemed to come naturally to me, so I tended to do well on papers in school. I took those skills and taught myself how to craft a story. I love creating plots and scenes in my head and getting them out on a page.  I love seeing readers enjoy my stories, knowing I made them happy for a few hours of their life.
