This past Saturday I strained an abdominal muscle, and have been in some serious pain in the days following. It wasn't until I figured out how to immobilize myself in Eric's recliner on Sunday that I began to feel some relief. By Monday, I still wasn't feeling anywhere near normal, but had some tasks that HAD to be completed, so I set out to do those first thing, and then back to the recliner for more R&R.

It's times like this that I'm thankful that I work for myself from home. In my former life, my jobs always entailed being on-call and available 24/7/365. I can't say that I miss the 2 AM phone calls nor the board members knocking on my door on the day I attempted to take off as a vacation day. While employed for someone else, I was never permitted to set any boundaries -- the workplace culture dictated that my life belonged to my employer, both on the job and off. In fact, one of the jobs I held made me so sick from the stress I was under that my doctor told me I needed surgery. However, as soon as I quit that job, all of my symptoms went away. That was the best surgery I never had...LOL

As I get older, I begin to appreciate good health more and more. And, while I don't have corporate "sick days" since I'm self-employed, I do have understanding clients and a much better ability to control my own schedule. No more being on-call 24/7/365 for me!

I do hope this message finds you feeling better, Donna. You are so right that working for others prevents the true ability to set boundaries and make time for oneself. Congratulations on your success and having discovered that you are worth a lot and you don't have to settle for others' lack of respect for your time and space.

Blessings,
Pastor Sharon Billington
