On A Country Road Pt. 1

Darryl Williams (C)2005

Ahhh!! Would be the perfect way to describe the way that I am feeling at this moment as I drive. It was not until now that I felt the effects of all of the tension and stress that my body, mind and spirit had been under. It was all due to those things that come with every day living along with the hustle and bustle of the city living. I thought that I had been making a conscious effort to minimize the tension and stress that tends to plaque me but obviously I had not been doing as well as I thought. As I drove down a two lane country road I reflected on the things that have occupied my mind and taken up my time over the past few weeks. A few things that came to mind were meeting deadlines, managing a house hold and balancing the check book. Let’ s not forget the things that come out of no where like having to replace the transmission as the warranty expires or having to replace the entire kitchen floor due to an unforeseen structural problem.

I roll the windows all the way down in the car so that all of the fresh country air can come flowing through and blow away all of the things that are running through my mind at this time. I turn my attention to the curtain of pine trees and focus on the green shrubs that are growing along the side of the road.

My spirit is begins to soar as all the things that are running through my mind get blown out the window. My thoughts are replaced by thoughts memories other country roads I had been on. I feel a tingling sensation in my stomach as I remember many years ago as a child walking down a long dusty road surrounded by corn fields and the additional half a mile or so just to get to the general store. I think back to the simplicity of country life when the only thing you wanted after a day in the blazing sun working the land was a nice tall mug of cold ice tea. The ice tea was of course being consumed as you catch the evening breeze on the porch swing.

My mind and body are totally relaxed now. I look out the window and I see a sign advertising fresh homemade peach ice cream a half a mile up the road. I think about stopping and getting some but the reality of the situation is if I did that then I would be suffering from digestive problems and excessive mucus. So I decided to pass on the peach ice cream. However I felt blessed by just being in a place where I could

get fresh home made peach ice cream on the side of the road.

I took a deep breath and inhaled the smell of the wild flowers that were growing just a couple of feet from the car. Their dazzling array of colors put me under a spell ad I was being renewed.
