Author Q&A: Lora Deeprose "The Still Life of Hannah Morgan"

“The longer you choose to play it safe, the more miserable your life will become. The universe rewards risk my dear; you know what you need to do.”

This week’s author is Lora Deeprose.

Lora Deeprose is the author of The Still Life of Hannah Morgan, an engaging romance novel published available from Lilley Press.

What inspired you to be a writer?

There was no one inspiration that directed me down this path. I’ve always loved the magical rhythm of words and the power of a great story. It was my oldest sister that suggested that I start writing down my stories and once I started, I just couldn’t stop.

What inspired you to write “The Still Life of Hannah Morgan”?

The Still Life of Hannah Morgan was partially inspired by my own experiences working in a well-heeled spa and some of the humorous events that happened there. And no, I won’t reveal if it was me that gave a client an eyebrowectomy. Also, I was intrigued by the struggle that we go through to discover our authentic selves and the courage required to express it even if it means disappointing the ones we love. In this novel, I played with the idea that every one of us wants to be seen, to find that someone who will stand witness to who we are. Finally, I wanted to explore the different textures of love from familial to romantic.

What did you find most difficult when you were writing this book?

Revisions. The fun part, the magical part is writing the first draft; spending time with the characters and watching the story unfold. The hard part is refining the story and sitting down at the computer with the editor’s notes when I’d rather be out in the garden or hanging out with friends.

What would you like your readers to take with them after having read “The Still Life of Hannah Morgan”?

That they related to Hannah’s struggle to express who she is even if it means going against the wishes of the people she loves. I hope the readers enjoy Hannah’s journey and laugh a little along the way.

Are you working on another project now?

I am working on two projects right now: a collection of essays about my experiences and misadventures as a city girl now living in the country and a paranormal romance set in the forests of the West Kootenays.
