Erik Hanberg visits, he asks the question: What would the world be like if anyone could see your innermost thoughts?

What would the world be like if anyone could see your innermost thoughts?

My newest novel, The Lead Cloak, is set 70 years in the future, in a time when privacy is a thing of the past. A super-Internet called the “Lattice” allows anyone to see you—anytime, anywhere. People can peer into your thoughts, too—and not just your current thoughts, but any you’ve had in the past as well.

The implications of a service like this are immense. People can visit Ancient Rome—and view it from the mind of Caesar, even. They can soar over the rings of Saturn, watch the first production of Hamlet, and generally have the ability to elevate their understanding of the nature of the world and themselves.

Unfortunately, humans being humans, a lot of them use it to debase themselves as well. Voyeurism of the worst kind. Terrible addiction. People’s darkest thoughts are exposed and shamed, even if it was a stray thought.

It shouldn’t be a surprise when I say that, in many ways, when I’m writing about the Lattice, I’m writing about the Internet. For all practical purposes, the Internet does let us see people’s thoughts. We can see people stripped bare, and too often the response is mockery, outrage, or shaming.

We’re getting to this level of sharing, whether we know it or not. How much does Facebook know about you? The NSA? Your neighbor?

Now, I’m glad to say that “The Lead Cloak” is also an exciting adventure in addition to a look at a society with no privacy. Because if a technology like the Lattice existed, you can bet a lot of people would want to destroy it, and that’s the main focus of the novel—the battle to destroy, or save, the Lattice.

I hope you will consider checking it out!
